Hello everyone .

Please could you give me some advice as I'm in a dilemma, :o

Earlier this year my friend called me late & rather worse for wear and said she was booking us a holiday for 2 weeks as we spoke .

I've only known her for 18 months and she's been really lovely but she drinks more than she should and when she does I take her with a pinch of salt . As you do :)

( she already told me that she needed to spend over 5 K before she goes bankrupt and so needed to spend her money beforehand . )

Regardless of my advice to find ways of spending it on herself , she insisted that we should go on holiday . Not specifically because she wanted me to go with her , but because her sister couldn't as they usually do .

Fast forward to the next day & she had booked it !

2 weeks In Cyprus S/C ? At the time I said she should cancel but she insisted albeit for just a a week and so changed the flights at a cost of £90.00 pp on top of the £700 she'd already payed .

I explained at the time that I just couldn't afford to go , but she insisted .

I really am cutting this thread short , but she's now demanding half the cost . Insists that she payed over £2100 for the holiday & Her ex husband is now sending veiled threats if I don't pay .

What should I do ?

Tell her you can't go. Friends don't make veiled threats!
  • Conwoman. Ditch her.

You haven't got a friend there. It's a newish acquaintance with a lurid past, who can be great fun, but is now trying to draw you into the drama of her life, and to take you down with it. Run.

Ignore her calls and stop talking to her. She cant 'threaten' you if you dont answer.

Yep, agree with the above posters.

She booked the holiday without your prior consent.
She wouldn't cancel even after you said you couldn't afford it.

She wouldn't be my friend any more if she thought she could treat me like this.

    BUT

Just in case her ex turns funny, I'd log all the details of what has gone on and what happens in the future.

This is really straightforward. Don't go and don't pay.

As an aside, I find this "... she needed to spend over 5 K before she goes bankrupt and so needed to spend her money beforehand" completely immoral. Find yourself some decent mates.

    What should I do ?

Daisy, it really is a no-brainer.

Regardless of my advice to find ways of spending it on herself , she insisted that we should go on holiday . Not specifically because she wanted me to go with her , but because her sister couldn't as they usually do .

Fast forward to the next day & she had booked it !

When she insisted that you go with her, did you keep saying 'No' or did you just let her have the last word?

Not that the answer matters, anyone who treated me like that (ignoring what I said, using me as a substitute for their sister) would be an ex-friend with no further discussion.

Hope you get it sorted out.

And I agree with Fluffnutter about the bankruptcy.

Just ignore her. I'm pretty sure you don't need friends like that.

Don't go, don't pay, ignore. How daft, "Surprise, I've got you a holiday! Oh, but you need to pay me for it." Sounds like a bit of a fruit loop.

The really cynical part of me wonders if this holiday even exists. Have you seen evidence of the booking or is she simply demanding money?

  • What's the dilemma again? Are you really considering going on the holiday or are you wanting to know how to get rid of her?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
