If it is a Dell, then Mcafee has to be registered. There is a bug stopping the registration process, with a patch on the Mcafee website.

OP .. see questions in post 4.. We don't even know if it is Vista or not yet.

Running all sort of online scanners is probably going to put a lot of junk on your HD.

I can't access the internet at all on my other laptop (my new one) and this laptop is hit and miss. How am I going to rectify this without internet access?!

    Pinkemsy,

I suggest you start a new thread with full details of your problem, what you have, what you've done, which OS, how are you connecting etc..

If you want to go backwards, do a system restore to a point where it worked, or boot into the restore partition, and put it back to the way it was when it arrived.

Thanks, I didn't want to clutter up the board but I will do that on a separate thread.
  • thanks - i just feel in a real muddle with it now. am running XP, only just got the laptop so macafee hadn't expired. but the process of registering macafee etc seemed so laborious (possibly due to a bug, as suggested above) and i didn't want to pay for macafee after the first month anyway. so i downloaded AVG, uninstalled macafee using windows unistaller, and installed AVG.

doing this, possibly something has gone wrong, though i thought i was fully protected because i never went online without having one of these running - at least i don't think i did - who knows....i have a feeling it was something to do with windows media player being online to get my music info for ages - but that's just a hunch.

so i did windows restore back to when macafee was ok - but there still seemed to be problems, ie slow, macafee error messages. so i ran a complete system restore back to factory state, but it still seems to be very slow. should the factory restore have got rid of any virus/malware if i'd got one? would reloading the XP discs make a difference?

can i get dell to do anything, particularly if the macafee installation problems weren't my fault as the earlier post seems to suggest?

I tried to follow the virus advice on here but got stuck in step 1 - something about 'error 0'. would i be better off taking it into a shop and asking them to sort it out for me? I am feeling technically stressed! How much will a shop charge? Frankly i'd be happy to pay £50 to get a IT shop person sort it all out and install a virus/firewall/anti everything, if I knew that it was defintely going to solve my problems and bring back my lovely speedy laptop...

If you did a full factory restore, it should be clean as it was when you got it.

What are the error messages you refer to?
    What is slow? How slow?

    Check your private messages.

In addition, you may need to remove all traces of the McAfee program.
