what is slowing down my computer and broadband?

Options
just bought a new laptop (recommended on here) and up til now its been turbo charged but it seems to have suddenly drastically slowed down, both generally (i think) but particuarly the broadband connection which has dropped to a download speed of only 60kbps rather than the 2Mbps it should be. Any idea why? I have transferred some files and music across from my old pc but that only takes about 3 GB of a 100GB hard drive so wouldn't have thought it was that? Have macafee virus scan and firewall operational at present. Am using opera to surf but normally that's super quick? I don't think I've done anything else to the laptop - had fiddled round to remove a couple of programmes i didn't want like google taskbar and MSN, but have restored the computer because i was worried i'd done something wrong and slowed it down - but doesn't seem to have made much difference.
any help gratefully recieved!

  • thanks, but no it's been happening since last night, was the same this morning too. i think something dodgy has got on to my pc despite the macafee, because the macafee is saying its not fully protected and needs reinstalling (but i'm not sure how i do that, i'd rather uninstall macafee and install AVG but not sure how to do that either) and there are some dodgy wierd looking text files that have appeared on my c-drive full of stuff about modifying and disabling stuff...

If its aol then thats probably your answer, they have reduced bandwith and speed on weekdays and claim its allowed under their new terms and conditions.

    DONT install AVG

  • thanks - am using tiscali, bbmax tells me i'm downloading at nearly 2mbps and uploading at 245kbps, but it just seems slow to me (definitely slower than it was before, this page for example takes a few seconds and used to be more or less instant). is AVG bad?

So many threads with people asking how to remove a Trojan, virus or Worm who have AVG installed.
Never seen such a post from anyone who has Kaspersky installed for instance.

Ok. there are other factors involved, but....

Anyway, clearly the problem is not connected to your broadband connection.

You'll need to scan your computer for viruses, worms and Trojans.

suggest doing a system restore to a point before it went slow.

    rstrui.exe

I am afraid Donnie is right. You've picked up a virus or something similar.
The first thing you have to do is run a virus and malware scan. Try somewhere like Panda online. The second thing you need to do is get decent protection.
