Smart dvd players.

I wish to make my TV a smart TV and I have been told that by buying a Smart DVD player this will do it.
Is this so?
What leads will I need for the TV, do they come with the dvd player?
Will I need to log onto my router with a lead or will it be WiFi?
As you can see I know very little, went into curry's to ask but the salesman was worse than me!
Help and advice please.

Have you identified a DVD player you wish to buy first of all? How much are you looking at spending??

    Right okay.

They dont always come with leads, that's why I was asking if you had seen a particular one, some companies bung them in the box, others dont.

You should be able to connect via wifi yes, when you have the dvd players menu on your screen you would choose the internet / wifi option setting and carry on from there, populating it with your wifi password etc

You can get a smart blu ray player for around the same sort of price, so go for one of those rather than a DVD player.

    Now its confusing.
I don't really wish to buy a separate dongle and I do not want to use a cable!
Need some more help on selection because I have not got a clue just getting more and more confusing.
Any suggestions for the easiest to set up and use?

You really need to go and have a look at a few players.

Some have wifi built in, and some require you to purchase a dongle.

On mine the wifi is built in, but I opted for the wired method via homeplugs using the mains wiring.

This ensured that I had no buffering when viewing films from the networked hard drive in the loft.

I think its getting more complicated but then it always does. Going into Asda in the morning they have some Sony's on offer.

OP - I don't think you're going to get great advice in Asda! Leave DVDs behind. You want a Blu Ray player. You could do a lot worse than just buy a PS3. By the time you find a Blu Ray player with built in WiFi, or get a dongle to add onto one, you'll have spent nearly as much, and be able to do far less.
PS3 has WiFi, Blu-Ray, iPlayer and all the things that makes a Smart TV smart, and can also, you know, play games! If you don't want to use the controller you can buy a remote control for it for under £20. If you want to save money buy a second hand one. All you need to buy is an HDMI cable. Buy it online instead of handing over wads of cash to Asda or Currys for the same cable!
    OR
GaryS - tell OP what your Blu-Ray player is...

In reply to almillar, my blu-ray player is part of an LG HB906PA Home Cinema system.

I also noticed in HMV (Reading Oracle) today, that they had some Sony blu-ray players on offer at £69.95.

They did have iPlayer and Youtube video built in so they must have been reasonable spec.
