one bolt/nut missing is plenty safe when you consider that the locking wheel nut if fitted should be torqued up to something like 30NM and not 100NM
Where did you get that from? It is totally wrong and dangerous statement! All the nuts/bolts should be tightened to the same and manufacturer specified torque value.0 -
ive a 04 plate focus diesil sport with low profile 17inch alloys (standard ford ones).
Totally off topic, but if they are the same wheel/tyre combo that I have fitted to my Focus (17" Continental Sportcontact), be careful with the tyres as a replacement will cost you round about £160 and even a "budget" tyre is about £110.0 -
Had four loose wheelnuts (forgot to torque them) on the front my old 306 after replacing a strut top bearing myself. Progressively worse & worse rumbling on a 35 mile drive that I was convinced was a wheel bearing eating itself. Was quite embarrassing when I discovered the problem by the side of the road in Middlesbrough in front of a few pedastrians.0

It certainly isn't safe to drive with missing or loose wheel nuts. They should be torqued to correct pressure as well using a torque wrench, Under or overdone is just as bad
Look at the force exerted on wheels/tyres on cornering as weight transfers. Done up preoperly they should not come undone unless there is an issue elsewhere either0 -
cheers for the replys.
got a new nut from the local scrappy for a quid.
see my post under Praise, Vent and Warnings to what Motorhog wanted to charge me for a nut!0 -

Your showing you age now
We were overtaken by the rear wheel of a Hillman Imp one time that was entertaining.0 -
I disagree with the scrappy solutions and prices
All I'm saying is that wheel bolts from a dealer aint that expensive.
Yes I agree get from scrappy as your first port of call, but I would think they should either be free of charge or only 50p each. And if no luck then go to a dealer, or phone for dealer price first and just go there rather than a failed trip to a few scrappies which wastes petrol.0 -
Modern scrappies you can phone them in advance and they have the part waiting for you.
Long gone are the days where you can climb on the cars yourself and remove the parts you need. A real shame as when I needed a part I'd learn how to put it on by taking it off the scrappy car, or sweet talking one of the staff into doing it for me
