charges and interest due to direct debit not going through

i have just come back from holiday and found out that for the last 2 months my direct debit payment to pay off the full amount of my CC has not gone through.

there is plenty of money in my current account to cover the amount, so this cant be the reason. i have checked my bank account online, and there is no record of the direct debit even being set up

surely the credit card company has an obligation to tell me if the direct debit has not even been set up in the first place for whatever reason, to allow me to pay via an alternative method??

rather than just allow the DD to be reversed each month and charge me fees and interest

No, its upto you to make sure that at least the minimum payment is received by them by the due date printed on your statement, UNLESS it specifically says "£x will be collected by direct debit on or after x/y/12" on your statement. If it says that, then contact your bank, otherwise you are the one responsible.

After 2 months, I'd expect marks on your credit report as well for non-payment. You might want to order copies of those to see the damage.
  • it does say on my statement,

"your nominated bank account will be debited with the full balance on 05/10/2012 or soon after"
  • First speak to your card company to see what happened with their statement that they were taking full payment by DD

Presuming they say your bank refused the DD then speak to your bank to see why they did

Depending on the outcome of the above two conversations you then need to raise a complaint with the appropriate company
  • tesco credit card have said the DD was declined / reversed, although they cant tell me why (i know it wasnt due to lack of funds)

still waiting to hear back from bank as to why this happened...

The only reason for a DD set up to be declined would be wrong account info.
Perhaps check with Tesco what details they were using?

Sounds like Tesco have the wrong bank account number or sort code otherwise you would see the DD on your bank account online

just checked, the sort code and account info i gave to tesco are both definitely correct, so ive no idea why it has never appeared on my list of direct debits when i checked my online banking??

is this tesco's or hsbc's fault?

But are the numbers that Tesco now have correct (you might think you gave them the correct details, but are these details the same as they now have on their system).
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
  • Need to see what the bank says first.

Worst case will be Tesco's saying they asked for the funds and it was declined and HSBC state that they never received a request for funds as this is an impossible situation but equally difficult for an outsider to prove which is telling the truth. In that example I'd ask for HSBC to confirm in writing that no DD payment request was received and then take the fight to Tesco given they are the ones who charged you and they are the ones that can update the CRA file at the end of the matter.

It could be HSBC advised they declined it in error in which case its straight forward to deal with the fees but the CRA issue is harder

For comparison, I have a new Tesco credit card and setup a DD immediately. They sent me an email to confirm it was setup about a day or two later with subject title "Tesco Bank Credit Card - Direct Debit set up" and it was then visible on my online bank account as "TESCO BANK". If I log in to Tesco to see my CC accont online, I can see "You currently make payments to your Tesco Bank credit card by Direct Debit" and I click "manage direct debits" I can see my bank account listed with the fixed amount. I am yet to receive my first statement.
