What car?

I have £5k towards a new car, and am prepared to spend up to £8k.
I currently drive a '52 VW Polo which has 103k on the clock. I need something bigger now I have a family, but we already have our "family" car and so doesn't have to be large; just the next size up I guess.
Most of my journeys are 20 miles ish and mainly used for commuting. I'm keen to keep the running costs down (tax, fuel, insurance) and obviously want something reliable. I also want as new as possible as I'll be keeping it roughly 6-8 years.
The obvious next one is a Golf; I like the VW and trust them, but are there any other cars out there that would fit the bill?
I'm a professional and so the car needs to look decent too, so am wanting to stay clear of a Fiesta and the like.
Thanks
xDx

VW Golf / Skoda Octavia / Seat Leon / Audi A3
All are basically the same car underneath.
Other family sized cars would be the Focus, Astra, Hyundai i30, Kia Cee'd.0 -
Odd thoughts have, A 2002 polo how can you look less professional than that?
Choice of polo of fiesta my moneys on the fiesta. Better engines, better spec, better value for money?
Stick to your overpriced golf and dont bother looking at the better cars out there because they wont fit your image of what car a professional person drives.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Another recommendation for a Focus. I am on my second since I started getting car allowance rather than a company car.
Comfortable to drive, and because I take it to an independant Ford-trained tech rather than the main stealership quite economical to run. Seats five comfortably as well.0 -

why have a go at the OP?
your post is nothing but. ahh whats that tv show....agh yes..pointless.
OP, i think youll find most executive cars are being down graded for more eco friendly to the pocket cars by many people in proffesional jobs or any other vehicle required jobs.
i wouldnt be tempted to stick with VW now you wish to conserve cash, your car is easy to get parts for cheaply with the newer models theyre so plumbed into the ecu that even when your washer resevoir get low it beeps at you every couple of mins to fill it up and make a peacfull trip annoying and anything can cause limp home mode expensive VW repairs and diagnostic.
reliability it has to be said that JAP cars still hold that end of the bargain.
toyota, honda, lexus.
Alpha's are looking nice again, and they own as well as fiat chrysler group if your looking for something a bit left field.
hyundai, kia, offer the best warranty, with not so dear service's.0 -
So a Honda Civic perhaps?

You can't go wrong with a Civic or Accord. they consistantly come top of the reliability tables.
Toyota Auris is another car with excellent reliability although many people regard them as a bit boring, if driving enjoyment matters to you0 -
caution should be headed with civics and accords and jazz, the layshaft bearings in the gearbox's can pose real expensive problems and seem to most common problem.0
