Indesit dishwasher - poor quality

Have had my Indesit dishwasher for just over a year.
The cutlery basket has just broken and Indesit won't replace it, insisting I buy a new one for £21.66 + P&P.
I'm a bit miffed that they only expect dishwasher parts to last 12 months and don't see this as unreasonable - and to charge over £21 for a piece of blue plastic is extortionate!
My last dishwasher was a Neff and that cutlery basket lasted over 12 years!!!
Any suggestions as to how I approach Indesit to replace this item FOC. We only use the dishwasher a couple of times a week, so it's not been overused.
Thanks.

How long do you think a one-year guarantee should cover you for?0

You'd need to go down the route of getting an independent report proving the basket was inherently faulty, and the damage was not down to misuse.
Alternatively, try ebay or amazon to save some money and just stomach the cost.Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0 -
Do what I did - go to the local recycling centre, and open a few old dishwashers until you find a couple of cutlery baskets. Take them home and see which one fits.0

According to the Sales of Goods Act a dishwasher should be sound for 6 years.
The 'less' strong parts may not last as long, but a year is very short. Trading Standards or Consumer Focus can give you a template letter to use to complain.
BTW: my Indesit washing machine is carp, too.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

This is not true.
Besides, after 6 months it is incumbent on the consumer to prove any problem is not caused by misuse. This may require an independent report, and needs to be channeled via the retailer, not the manufacturer.
It will be easier all round to just buy a new cutlery tray.0 -

I got one from an abandoned dishwasher too - after being quoted a ridiculous price for a new one.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
Unless you bought it from Indesit its nothing to do with them , any reports etc need to be sent to the retailer
Just looked on ebay and they start at £5

Thanks to all the constructive posters.
I do think dishwashers and parts should last longer than a year of light use (especially as my lovely old Neff lasted over 12 before being passed on to a friend when I had a new kitchen - wish I'd kept it now).
I also think that £21.00 for a piece of plastic is taking the p155, which is the main reason I didn't want to fork out for a new one - I could stomach £5, which is about what it it worth.
I may try the dump, or ebay as suggested.0 -

I am fully aware that the responsibility lies with the retailer. However, with a decent retailer would replace the tray after such a short time.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

??????
But that's not what you were on about previously, is it? You said:pollypenny wrote: »According to the Sales of Goods Act a dishwasher should be sound for 6 years.

Hence I corrected your mistake. I also provided some further information to the OP, that if they wanted to go down the SoGA route they needed to take it up with the retailer (as they had dealt with the manufacturer to date).0
