Vista Problem

Options
Bought a new pc with Vista Basic. Can't open Word documents I've copied across from my old pc. They claim to be opening in "Ability Write" but don't show up the contents - just the same six symbols for each document.
Also it won't load up the operating software for my xerox scanner.

Any ideas?
I rang the 0800 helpline and left a message  ... they haven't rung back, yet. :o

I presume you've installed Office Software on the new PC?? If it's an issue of buying software, read Free Office Software for info.

I'm also aware that xerox only have a few vista drivers available at the moment - try their website or helpline: 0800 0199689

Do you have Word installed on this new PC?

I think Tesco's office is a waste of time and money really. You're better off downloading open office which is completely free, much better and is completely compatible with Microsoft Office files.

oh dear :o I might have to look at that

Tesco just sent an email to say my files must be corrupt - but theyr'e not - they're on a portable hard drive and they still open on another pc.

My money's still on it being Vista or the pc itself (an Acer - erm, from Tesco  ). Give Tesco their due though - I got a real techie email response in about an hour.

  • I had the same problem with Vista for my scanner but I found it worked through a programme called Picasso that came with either Vista or Google.

I thought there was a program compatibility wizard in Vista that allows you to use a different OS setup for problem program/devices...

Seems like there are some compatibility issues with Tesco office depending on complexity of original microsoft files.

Edit: The most important part of the above review is the last sentence "More knowledgeable users will know, however, that OpenOffice 2 is better - and free."

Fluffymuffy - it ain't the computer it's Vista. My husband's had  problems with it for quite a while now - too many bugs at the moment.
