How to find out all ISAs held?

Hi, my father has just passed away and I am dealing with his estate. I know he used his whole ISA entitlement each year, but can't seem to find all the paperwork. Is there somewhere I can go to to get a list of all his ISAs? They will all be linked to his NI number, so surely an easy thing?

Many thanks

May be the HMRC can help, they get a report from all banks for all ISAs. They almost certainly wouldn't have this year's report yet since the Financial Year is still ongoing.

Or may be https://www.mylostaccount.org.uk/index.htm could help.

HMRC will not be able to help I'm afraid. Although they will receive annual returns from banks and building societies, of ISA accounts and interest credited, which as OP suggests are linked to NINOs, they are not allowed to disclose details because of Data Protection Act.

Another example of bureaucracy gone mad. When it comes to the sad task of distributing an estate, nobody, not even the HMRC, should be allowed to hide behind the DPA. I would take them to Court if they tried to.

The Data Protection Act applies only to LIVING individuals, but equally, that doesn't mean they HAVE to provide you with the information.

You might want to consider if there is another act of parliament to use.

If you want to claim a lost account, then you need to complete a form - you can get one from the Building Societies Association at https://www.bsa.org.uk (020 7437 0655) or the British Bankers' Association at https://www.bba.org.uk (020 7216 8909). If you know which society or bank the account was with, then you send the form to its head office, otherwise it goes to the BSA or BBA. For societies that have become banks - such as Halifax and Woolwich - go to the BBA.

Presumably you have the Grant of Representation.
  • Thanks to you all for advice. Much more difficult than I imagined which does seem ridiculous when they are all linked to his NI number. I think it maybe easier to get access to his email account and see what is in there. As more and more people do their banking online this must be an ever increasing problem. I know I dont have the details of my ISAs printed out!
