Even when it's other people who are asking?

Yes, because the correct answer to "which web host should I use" isnt to list a load of web hosts!

The asker could well be wanting to host a JSF based solution then 99% of suggestions would be useless as your typical budget LAMP webhost doesnt support the framework.

Those asking may not realise the differences as if they did they would be specifying that they need ASP.Net 3.5 or a LAMP setup that support RoR etc

The tail shouldnt wag the dog. The infrastructure must support the application not the application being made to fit the infrastructure

TBH the majority of people on here who ask probably only want it to host some files, possibly a basic HTML website or for the more adventurous using one of the freebie apps that come with cpanel

I doubt that anybody who knows enough to want Ruby, ASP.NET or other similar funcionality will be so daft as to ask on a consumer board for recommendations

  • But there are freebie apps for .Net, RoR etc

More than once in my web dev days I was asked to help someone get their site working and found they were trying to use DNN or YetAnotherForum on a LAMP because someone on a forum had told them that this was the best host and another forum had told them that YAF was the best free forum etc

    Vidahost are BRILLIANT!!

I used to be with 123-reg and got fed up with the 2-3 days it took them to reply to emails. With Vidahost, I once had a detailed reply to a support ticket in less than two minutes. (not suggesting that will happen every time of course!)

All their staff are UK-based and they have a very cute office dog:

What more could you want? :)

We have their Medium Package for our website:

For all packages except the most basic they do three years for the price of two, so we signed up for three years domain/hosting for £118. Cheaper than 123-reg, and they transferred our website for us for free!

Have used Easily for years, their tech support has been fair.

Like pinkteapot, I recommended Vidahost based on many recommendations I had had for them.

I should perhaps explain that I build websites for a living and I have used several different hosting companies over the years. I tried Vidahost for the first time earlier this year and they were great. I have now used them four times and I can confirm that their support is also excellent.
