Can I just ask how you received your child benefit ? I cannot for the life of me fathom how it stopped? Once its claimed it doesn't really matter if you move as its either collected at the Post Office or paid into your bank so how would moving house stop it being paid?

  • Whilst I have a huge amount of sympathy and do think you deserve the money, you are blaming the wrong people. You didn't check your bank account, your mistake, your anger should be directed at you, I'd be kicking myself too.

I don't think you will be able to get it backdated though as you have no valid reason to. Your mistake was your's and not theirs.

That said I really hope you do (this was money you were entitled to and on Tax Credits you have a low income), but I can't see how you can to be honest.

Sorry but i have to agree with this to be honest

    in over 6 years you didn't;

    check your bank account
you didn't phone them to check if it was rolled into tax credit
a simple Google search would of told you that it wasn't rolled into tax credit

I know your mad that you didn't get the money owed but a simple look on the hmrc website says that its down to you to check that your getting all benefits

honestly cant see you getting 6years back as HM Revenue will ask you the same questions why you didn't look into it sooner then 6years or double check anything

You could write them a letter but to be fair i wouldn't get your hopes up getting 6years backdated

don't see how its a disgrace as really its your fault for not checking within 6 years?

    It can happen.

I had mine stopped once and I had not even moved house.

When I rang them they said they had stopped it because a letter they had sent me had been returned to them as not known at that address.

No idea how it happened but I did pick up that it had stopped, not for a while though because it went into a Building society account, and they backdated it for me.
  • Yes it was paid into the bank . Yes 6 years or 7 years ago the Internet was all new to me like many other people that are descovering the Internet now . The world doesn't revolve online or it seems it does now . At the end of the day it's child benefit that your entitled to by law and it's easy for hmrc to check what you should have received . It's a disgrace if they don't pay up what your kids are owed even if mistakes have been made . At the end of the day it's money in their pocket but it will be looked at in further detail

Life does not work like that.

It is up to the individual to ensure they receive their entitlement.
  • Thanks for all your comments . I have tonight put a complaint to child benefit and if I do just receive 3 months or more I will post back to let everyone know the outcome of what I do receive but as I said previous will be putting it in the hands of a solicitor if hmrc are ignorant to this situation

Reading posts on here I should have got Tax Credits (when it first came into being). I should have got DLA for when my eldest had her illness and was awating a transplant, my GM should have had AA and DLA

How far do you take the "your responsbility" notion?

Does everyone back date claims? How far do we go? 10 years, 30 years?

Sometimes you take your own actions and responsbilities on the chin.

I'd like to see OP get it, but wouldn't think it was an entitlement to this backdated money.
  • its down to the individual to ensure they receive their entitlement.

You didn't check within 6years at all if it rolled into tax credit so honestly don't see what your expecting to get from this as its your mistake

Yes it maybe child benefit but its down to the individual to ensure they receive their entitlement

HM Revenue will tell you the same thing, and your be questioned from them why it took 6years for you to bring this up now and never ring them to check

honestly cant see a solicitor taking on the case as im sure they will find it hard to believe that it took 6years for you to either check any of the details at all

You may get 3months back but i cant see you getting any more then that

I know people may sound harsh and all but to get to the point it really was your fault for not checking within 6years
  • Fair point should of reworded it better,
