Anybody unlocked an iPhone 3Gs
I tried following this guide:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=20522
But now all I get is 'No Service' with my O2 sim card and under 'Settings' --> 'Phone' --> 'My Number' it says 'No number'...
I'm trying to enable it to be used on Orange.
Anybody combat this ?

I did it via O2 (using there web site) for £15, no issues or problems; did it a couple of years ago and have upgraded the iOS several times, swapped sims (now with T-Mobile / EE) etc.
Far the easier and safest way of doing it & fully legit, but you have to be out of contract.

Sounds like its blocked
Was it working before you tried to unlock it ?
If not then its blocked by a network and you will not be able to remove that....Unless you ring the network they are the only one that can unblock it
i had my done by O2 online the same as Chorlie
Jailbreaking is unlocking Not unblocking they are 2 different things.Nobody is Perfect. I am Nobody, therefore I am Perfect.0 -

what ios version and modem were on the phone before you started?
Jailbreaking doesnt unlock, best advice, especially for someone unsure of what they are doing, do a restore in iTunes and then pay the network for an official unlock.====0 -

Yes it was. It's also woring now i've done a standard restore in iTunes.sounds like somewhere along the process you have messed up.

It's version 6.
But it's under contract still, but I want to sell it to a relative and get a cheaper handset.0 -

Call the network and pay them, any other way is most likely to be an issue later.
Apple don't lock iPhones in the same way as everyone else. Most phones are unlocked by entering a subsidy code to the handset, after that they stay unlocked.
I believe Apple supply all phones unlocked, and then on activation the phone contacts Apple and then locks to the appropriate network. When you request an iPhone be unlocked the network contacts Apple and someone changes the "lock" flag in Apples database, and on next sync the phone reads the database and becomes unlocked.
This means if you do a restore they may return to a locked state, as well as doing so after any software update or potentially anytime someone uses itunes to sync. Any non-official unlock will not change the flag in Apples database so the phone could always be re-locked.
If your selling it on and use any un-official unlock mechanism you risk grief as the locked status may come back later on if they upgrade.0 -

There is no unlock or jailbreak for iOS 6.
It doesn't normally matter about being in contract, just contact the network (use the web page for O2) and pay for the unlock. It's the safest ( and only really permanent) method to unlock the phone.

Right, ok. That would explain it I guess. Looking over the article it does actually say to download the 5.1 version. It doesn't normally matter about being in contract, just contact the network (use the web page for O2) and pay for the unlock. I've filled in the form and got the standard message 'Your request has been sent... [snip]...If you've asked for your iPhone to be unlocked, we'll text you in the next 14 days'
I'm assuming the text will contain further instructions and how to pay?
Do you know how much it will cost as it doesn't seem to say how much on the website.0 -
Just got an email from O2 saying it has been completed and to plug the phone in to iTunes.
Needless to say the phone is now unlocked. Best of all didn't cost me a penny!!
Well done Apple and O20 -
Sorry to hijack the thread but my DD has just bought an iphone 3gs from an ebay shop and it has locked after she tried to update the software.
The 'shop' she bought from have told her to return it to them and they will unlock it for her. When she questioned what would happen at future updates, they simply said "return it to us again".
This seems ridiculous when she would have to pay for SD each time and be without a phone for several days but they say that only they can do it.
Is there any way to tell what network it is locked to so that she could try the tips mentioned on this thread?I let my mind wander and it never came back!0
