TV Problems

We have got a new TV in a bedroom upstairs and we cant seem to receive a good picture on ITV on it. We can get the other channels fine but not ITV. Is this likely to be the TV faulty or something to do with the cables?

We have tried the TV, a 19" Samsung LCD Widescreen in another room where the TV already there works fine and again the ITV picture is rubbish, however trying another TV in the room where the Samsung isnt playing right and the old Matsui TV works fine, okay the picture is a bit grainy but is perfectly watchable.

The other thing is all our cables. Ill try not to confuse you here:confused: . We have a main TV and the aerial goes from that to another room where it has a splitter which goes upstairs to two rooms. From one room it has an extension (think about 15m extension) to the aerial cable into the next room (my room) where my TV works well but when trying the new TV the ITV picture quality is poor. From the other room upstairs there is another splitter and one cable goes from here to a TV in that room and the other cable goes into another room, which is another 15m cable, and goes to the new Samsung TV.

Sorry if this is confusing but I thought if I gave as much detail as possible then someone may be able to offer some advice!

Maybe you should try installing the booster (amp) in the loft and feed the upstairs rooms directly from there.

We are talking about analogue, we cant actually get freeview though we have got sky on the main TV downstairs, we had this since January and can view it on the other TVs but only whatever they are watching downstairs, you have no control over the sky channel upstairs

The Samsung TV is LCD but the other TVs are Matsui and several years old - and seem to work better than the new one!

The booster made little if any difference at all, again this was a booster from Argos

Thanks for that, dont have a clue where in our attic the TV cable is - would it not come straight from the roof down the outside of the house into the room where the main tv is? We live in the countryside in a farmhouse if that makes a difference?!

We have tried the booster in a couple of different places along the cable - well the places there are joins but no joy.

The other thing is when I put the booster in the upstairs room where there is a splitter it takes out the ITV signal to the other Matsui TV in the room but makes the Samsung one a bit better - but still barely seeable

We can get BBC1, BBC2 and Channel 4 no probs its just the ITV that we are struggling with which is really puzzling us!

It depends on how the downlead was installed, I know it's fed through the loft in many houses. If the aerial is in good condition and works for most tv sets and other channels it is unlikely a booster will make much difference.

Some tv sets are less sensitive than others and would require a strong signal to get a good picture. Your ITV signal may not be as strong as the other channels, also have you tried searching the full band in case there is a stronger ITV signal available?

In order to distribute your TV signal to a number of rooms you need a some kind of distribution amplifier/booster. It also important that its wired up correctly. The amplifier should be connected to the aerial and ten individual feeds run of it to each TV, you cannot simply tap of a single lead and expect to get good results.
The one you buy will have the same number of outputs as you have TV's, some can also be used to distribute VHF for FM radios, and you can also get ones compatable with the TV-Link magic eye that you can uses with Sky boxes.

Sounds as if you have a nightmare system installed by a guy with a horse and spurs. I recommend you get a professional to wire it up properly. Also, since analogue won't be around for much longer, you should make sure the new installation will get you Freeview in every room.

For DIY info look no further than the Satcure web site. Start with this page:

Thanks for that. The system that we have has been here years and years - probably about 15 years or so.

Currently we are unable to get freeview but we are hoping to get an aerial man out to sort a few bits out but we just need to find one in our area, but saying that we havent actually looked yet!
