Hi,
Saw a rep from a company called Renovate Protective Coatings based in Derbyshire the other day.
Our roof is abit of a mess and does need some sort of work doing on it.
The things he said were very impressive. ie they clean the roof, replace broken tiles, add costings which protect it from any damage/moss etc and basically make the roof look like brand new. The samples they showed looked very impressive
They have also offered a good price based on they want to use us as a show home (maybe they say that to everyone, i don't know)
Anyway, just wondered if anyone had come across this company below? Ive searched on Google but can;t find much
The cost is £3k (we do have a big house though) so i do want to check as much as possible before i commit to anything.

R.U.N!
Sounds distinctly like one that was on watchdog recently. Show home is an obvious con - they say that to everyone. Its a bit like the magician moving his hands around a lot and chattering to disguise the fact he's taking things out of his sleeve - in this case they've talked about the discount etc to put you off the scent of the fact that this work is ferociously over priced.
Moss is a natural fact of life on a north facing roof - doesn't really do any damage, and the coatings don't do a lot to stop it or protect it either. (In fact some coatings do damage by preventing the material breathing properly). If all it needs is a few tiles sorting out you should be talking a couple of hundred quid (maybe more if scaffolding is needed). If it really needs re-roofing, none of this will put that off and you'll be £3k further from being able to afford it.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
Just to add - a company under the name of Renovate Protective Coatings Ltd (registered address Chesterfield in Derbyshire) was disolved on 18th September according to Companies House. It is possible that the owner decided to stop being a company and simply trade as a sole trader, but there are few sensible reasons for doing that especially in the current climate.
I'd avoid.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
Someone trying to sell roof coating would set alarm bells ringing with me immediately. First of all, I don't think roofs need coating. If tiles are broken they need replacing etc. At best it sounds like (probably expensive) unnecessary work. At worst, the coating will cause long term problems for example when it starts to fail. For example the previous owners of my house painted the exterior in some sort of textured paint that was promoted as a low-maintenance weather proofing, but now it has started to peel in patches it's going to be much more difficult to redecorate than if they had used ordinary paint. Ironically, underneath is the same ordinary exterior paint they have next door, which has lasted much better!
A bit of moss or lichen growth is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. It seems some companies have found they can make money persuading people their roofs should permanently look like the one on a newly built house.Solar install June 2022, Bath

Thanks both, appreciate the replies. Yes, the company situation is a bit concerning.
I'll be giving it a miss.0 -
Hi guys, I just stumbled across this and thought I'd give a little knowledge into the situation.
I run a waterproofing company and actively "coat" roofs, this side of things is getting more and more sought after, we currently DO NOT knock on doors to sell as I personally don't like this method of selling as there is little you can do to stop pressure selling by your salesmen and in turn giving a bad view of your company.
Anyway, the coating side of things is usually just for cosmetic purposes, there is however advantages to getting your roof sealed including, new looking roof, can help save energy by keeping the tiles dry (wet tiles draw the heat out of your property), the coatings we use save more on energy than roof insulation (this has been proven), self cleaning meaning less moss and less weight, which in turn can prevent your roof from frost damage, saturation damage and overweight (1 square meter of wet moss can weigh as much as 1 tonne). These are just a few...
I wouldn't personally go with a company that recently dissolved either.
The industry has a bad name because nobody knows much about the roof coating side of things and then got bad exposure on watchdog.
We however have not had one single complaint (on the roofing side of things) we did have one for painting but we sorted it out right away (one of our lads was having a bad tie at hoe and decided to bring his problems to work) these things happen, we have been trading since 2008 as sole traders but as we were getting bigger jobs on we registered earlier this year, and haven't looked back.
If you have any questions please message me and I will be happy to answer.
send a picture of your home too and I an tell you if £3000 is too much or a good deal.
Thanks for your time, just thought you should know not everyone in the industry is bad.0 -
sorry as a new user I cannot provide links, I can say they are becoming more easier to find as companies are realising customers need proof, check energy coatings website under isoseal.
Obviously overweight will cause problems, most common the tiles will break under this kind of pressure, it's not rocket science..0 -
As explained in reply to your other post:1 tonne = 1000 kg which is approx 1 cubic metre of water.
So the square metre of totally saturated moss would need to be at least 1 metre thick to weigh a tonne
SPAM!
(combined with very misleading sales pitch...)0 -

Since most roof tiles are not even close to 1 meter sq i dont see that as a issue. Your roof is designed to hold much more weight than this.
It was clams like this that got the company on watchdog to start with. It goes along with claims of insulating wall paper, insulating paint etc...
The only so called proof is companies who sell the products.
Please state the R value of your product (no link required)

1m2 of moss=1 tonne is also BS
1m3 of water=1 tonne so it would have to be some pretty thick moss to weigh that much!
Utter BS on the insulation. Does your coating have a BBA certificate to confirm its bold claims?! What is the composition of this magic coating?
Leave the roof alone, if it's not broken don't fix it and if it needs a couple of new tiles then get a decent roofing contractor to replace them; roofs do not need to look like new to be functional and in good condition.
.......and don't buy from anyone on the showhome thing- it's been the preffered method of many a double glazing company over the years!0
