Faulty coat, no reciept. Any rights?

Hi there I wondering if there is anything I can do in this case.
I bought my son a coat from Next outlet in August.

I no longer have the reciept.

The coats inner lining has come apart and the stuffing is coming out.

I'm pretty sure its a fault with the coat as its the stiching thats split rather than damage my son could have caused in the play ground.

Without the reciept do I have any rights at all.

I'm just a bit miffed that a brand new coat hasn't even made to the first half term.:(

Did you pay via cash or card ? If card, then you have an audit trail you can follow and proof of purchasing something from them.

But if it's just the stitching coming apart, then maybe a needle and thread is all you need ?
  • You don't actually need a receipt. All you need is some form of proof of purchase and this could be a bank statement or credit card statement showing the date of purchase.

If you have this, you may find that the store staff will initially refuse to accept it and will try to stick to the "no receipt no refund/exchange", and if they try this you should then speak to the store manager.

If you no no proof of purchase, it would still be worth going back to the store and having a word with the manager. Explain the situation and see if they would be willing to do something.

    I will have paid cash.

It quite a big hole now.

I don't have a sewing kit or I would have perhaps had a go at repairing it myself but i'm not very good at sewing.

If thats my only option I might have to see if grandma would be willing to help with a repair;)

I might try a trip back to the store first though.

I really need to start saving reciepts.

Nip back to the store, Next coats are seasonal and if its an Autumn/Winter jacket wont have been on sale until August ish anyway.

I have an issue with a kids next coat that faded in the wash despite following the instructions to the letter. I took it back, they agreed immediately and exchanged it. This was a month or two after purchase and with no receipt.

    Worth a try anyway.
    Good luck

Come back and tell us how you got on.

Loads of posters, post on here saying bad things about companies and what should they do. They then go back, get it sorted, above and beyond what is legally required, probably and then never repost and say how good they are.

As is normal, we complain about service/products, but don't praise when things are sorted.

I have got into giving praise for things I have bought/done. I have 8 postings on various websites giving them a good name. I have only complained once about a company and then reposted when things were sorted to my satisfaction.

Thing I don't like about review websites, or sites like this, are that companies don't have the right to put their side of an argument across. They are always the bad guys, when 90% of the time they are not.

Yes I'll be happy to come back and update.

I'm going to try and nip to the store sometime this week.

It's from outlet so it's not seasonal (unless its Special Purchase range that's made specifically for outlet) But Next have got a very lax (or should that be good) policy on returns anyway

Remember to go to Outlet and not the mainline store.

    UPDATE

Thanks for all the replies to this thread.

Its wasn't straight forward as had no proof of purchese and the washing label was missing which made it difficult for the obtain how much the item cost as coat was no longer on sale in the shop.

They accepted the coat was faulty and after a few members of staff got involved and a manager and a twenty mins of staff runnning around looking for the coat, and faffing with the till they kindly sorted a replacement.

I consider myself very luckly to have been given a replacement coat, it is exactly the same style just a different colour it was the only one in the back of the store and happened to be the right size.

    :)

Next are normally pretty good about stuff like this. One of the better retailers out there.
