If i am still in contract with them can i get a new router for free or will i have to pay?

You can ask, but you'll have little leverage if still in minimum term. if fre they'll probably want to extend your contract by a further 12m.
The router is not leased but your property, and if it fails it's not their reponsibility to replace it.
Perefectly serviceable Netgear ADSL modem routers are available on ebay for about a fiver if not.No free lunch, and no free laptop

They tried to make me extend my contract,i threatened to leave and pay up whatever is left on my contract,two hours later i got a call saying they are sending me a free router.0
