hi there

when i turn on my pc the monitor power light will be green which indicates there is a signal been sent, but the screen can be black ( as though it switched of )

i can unplug the cable re plug back in ( light will go from orange to green) still blank screen,.

also what can happen i can plug the vga cable in, you see the screen working as normal then it all starts to turn black starting from the centre of the screen, till the whole screen is black , takes about 2 seconds. (appearing as though its turned off once again, although green light still on)

then if if a keep trying it will then work and be fine until i restart the pc or bring back from hibernate, although it does not happen all the time.

tried new vga cables same thing keeps happening , many thanks

It will be either be a defective inverter or backlight in the monitor. There were numerous problems with defective capacitors in the inverter in 'Flatron' monitors.Probably not worth getting repaired unless its a recent 'quality' monitor.
  • many thanks , this is getting stranger turned computer on, green light on monitor blank screen , took vga cable out plugged back in no change.

booted laptop, plugged vga cable in laptop, laptop screen came straight up on monitor. plugged vga cable back in to pc working again fine.

is it worth trying a cheap pci graphics card, if so can anyone recommend one ?

    many thanks
  • You will need to post the make and model of your PC.

  • eBay if you are prepared to wait for it to be sent but it would do no harm asking your friends and family if they have a spare graphics card.
Many of us upgrade our computers and have spare bits lying around.
Another thing you could do is ask your local repairer if they have a second hand card that they could sell you.

Could the integrated graphics be used whilst OP waits for a replacement card?
  • I presumed that it was the integrated graphics that was causing the problem.
