Advice on buying a flat in Glasgow?

Hi,
I'm a post-grad and am hoping to move to Glasgow to study for my Phd. I'm a first time buyer, and I'm looking at flats around the 25 000/ 30 000 as I would like to buy a flat straight out. Has anyone bought a flat in this price range? Were there many hidden costs?
Could anyone recommend areas that are relatively inexpensive but safe, and not too far out of the city?
Many thanks,
Jess

If you don't know the areas make sure you do thorough research, as many (most) properties that price in Glasgow city will either need a lot spending on them to be habitable, in a very undesirable (unsafe) area or both!

were in Glasgow and I havent seen any in that price range, even flats that need completely refurbished, especially if you want a decent area, cheapest I have seen is 50,000 mark and they would need about 20,000 to make them habitable

As someone who is currently looking in Glasgow (and also lives here already) I completely agree with this.
  • Check the factoring arrangements very carefully. Also search the Landlords' Register to see how many flats in the building are rented out. Non-resident landlords can be awkward to chase up for repairs.

You'd be looking well outside the City then. There's (w w w.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-35593429.html) a studio in East Kilbride on at £35,000, with a 30min train ride into Glasgow Central from Hairmyres station or (w w w.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-22760331.html) a one-bed in Dumbarton at £38,000, about 40 mins to Queen Street.
  • No chance! Even well out of the city you won't get anything remotely decent, and the travel costs would be very high.

So... The various flats in Rutherglen, Dennistoun, etc at 28-30k aren't 'anything decent', then...?

Well, I wouldn't want to live there so to me, no. But then I suppose the OP may feel differently.

Depending on the intended Uni, Dennistoun might be OK, it is an improving area. Rutherglen is a bit further out. There are a few there under £30k, they look like ex-council properties.

Be careful if buying ex-council, there could be very high repair bills in the pipeline.

Dennistoun is a better bet I think.

Ibrox and Govan are other areas where you can pick up cheap property.
