in Water bills
I currently live on my own and have done for two years, my house does not have a water meter, and after talking to some work collegues it seams im being way over charged by Yorkshire Water, I looked on their website and they say a light single home user would be expected to pay around £188 a year??
I am not on a meter, but amnow paying £52.90 a month for 10 months of the year, ie £529.00 How can they justify this? i did tell them when i moved in i was living on my own, i just didnt realize how much i was being over charged?
Tomorrow i will be ringing Yorkshire Water for an explanation, I understand that not being on a meter is different to being on a meter, but surely not by 3 times the going rate?
Is there anything i can do to claim back all the extra money i have been forced to pay by not knowing what i should have been paying?
Thanks Paul :mad:

What you have done is the equivalent of staying on standard tariff with an electricity supplier when you could have switched to a lower cost one.
The going rate (as you put it) is that based on your RV not what they charge against a meter reading. Its not Yorkshire Water's fault you have been paying too much its yours TBH.

No, you cannot 'claim back the difference'. Your bills are based upon the RV of the property, which is a historic value over which YW have no influence whatsoever. It was up to you to switch to a meter if you wished, you must have known it would be much cheaper yet you waited for two years. and have still not switched.
YW are not psychic, for all they know there could be ten people living in the property using vast amounts of water, in which case a meter would hardly be cheaper.
Your bill willl go down if you request a meter and have it fitted, not before. There is no provision for a retrospective credit.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
You have not been over charged at all. You have been charged correctly for the property.
You need to apply for a meter and then you will be paying for what you use and nothing more and if a meter fit is not possible you can be placed onto the assessed single rate but you MUST apply for a meter first.
There is no point phoning them and asking for an explanation as there is nothing more they can say...You are being charge the RV rate of your property and that is that.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

Above posts are all correct.
As for the 'Yorkshire Water are robbers' implication, it is pertinent to point out that it makes no difference to Yorkshire Water's profits if you are charged £100 a year or £1,000 a year. They are only allowed by the Regulator(ofwat) to raise £xxmillion in revenue. If you, and doubtless thousands of others, pay less by having a meter, then other charges are increased to compensate.
Every bill you have received will have pointed out that you could apply to have a meter fitted.0 -
If you are on benefit or low income you could ask your water company to send you the info needed to apply to their charitable trust for help in paying your water charges.0
