Rust on fireplace surround

My cast iron fireplace surround has some rust showing through on the mantle-piece.
Can anyone recommend a product that will deal with it? I'm assuming shoe-polish is not advised.

Just brush off lightly with wire brush or steel wool and use use some paint than is heat resistant
There is a black polish you can get forgot its name leaves a light silvery black colour though
