I would start by actually fixing the problem causing the overheating which is throttling the processor speed instead of trying to use a quick fix (cooling pad) which doesn't actually do anything other than empty your wallet.

Absolutely seconded - I cleaned out a lappy of similar vintage earlier on today. The owner had never done so, and had multiple pets in the house...you should've seen the size of the furry slug stuck behind the heatsink  That and new heatsink compound (aka thermal paste a lot on here) on the cpu/gpu and it's cooler than the proverbial cucumber again.. and quicker for it ;)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I found a page on Dell support that told me how to do that. It took a while to get the back off but I did it and it was dusty but not dreadful - but I cleaned it all anyway. Then put it all back and it seems happier!

my votes for diskeeper, simply because we've had it running on our 30 servers since version 9 and the subject of fragmentation hasn't come up since. as the it director, this is obviously a good investment.

diskeeper was in the news today - did you see it? on CNBC's website - search for "openBench Labs Testing Shows Condusiv's Diskeeper 12 Windows Acceleration Solution Dramatically Improves Storage and System Performance vs Microsoft Windows Built-in Utility"

Does anyone use or recommend Diskeeper? Or is it an unnecessary expense?
    It's an unnecessary expense.
  • I've been using Diskeeper for a number of years, works well for me. However the change to Condusiv introduced a new UI that frankly to my mind is appalling, I won't be upgrading further.
  • TadleyBaggie, i don't like windows 8's UI either - but if microsoft decides that's how it's going to stay, eventually i won't have a choice but to upgrade and deal with it.

like i said, i've used diskeeper since version 9.0, and to be honest, i hardly ever look at the UI - because after you install it (especially in the new Condusiv one you mentioned), you really never have to look at it again. after all, their motto is "set it and forget it". to be honest, on the servers i haven't opened the diskeeper 12 UI since the initial install.
