Does anyone use or recommend Diskeeper? Or is it an unnecessary expense?
I have a 4 year old laptop which is getting slower but still OK I have recently invested in a cooling pad and that was good. I am debating wheter or not to get a new machine or tinker with this for another year or so.

My personal preference is Raxco PerfectdiskThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I occasionally use Auslogics Disk Defrag which is freeware and very good. Piriform's Defragler, also free, is similarly good.
However defragging is not going to noticeably alter the speed of your laptop.
Which aspects of performance appear to be slower? What OS do you have? Can you post the HJT log from when you did the sticky?604!0 -
If it's vista, defrag is built in, a 3rd party defragger won't make a jot of difference to the speed.
backup data to a removable drive and reinstall windows (takes 10-15 minutes on a Dell) and it should run like new
or post a hijackthis log!!

I know this is going to sound expensive but upgrade to an SSD drive.
It is cheap in comparison to a new laptop and the performance improvement is miraculous.
I bought this one after reading what smart people thought..
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-CT256M4SSD2-256GB-M4-SSD/dp/B004W2JL2A/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1350235085&sr=1-2
Every aspect of the computers performance seems to improve
And no need to sort out a fragmented disk.
These drives have only recently dropped by about 60% so make economic sense ..0 -

Bye the way I have the free/trial edition of Diskeeper.
What is driving me mad is that I get " xyz is not responding" frequently. Not enough to make me rush out and buy a new one but enough to try to sort things out.0 -
that's a short log, just a list of processes.
I suggest uninstalling spybot and superantispyware, and replace with avast free for starters, disable ie toolbars, and uninstall old printers etc. - but there is a high likelyhood a factory restore will cure it faster than any other method
knowing what xwz is, is important
You are just wasting time with defraggers, they are more likely to slow the system down!!

I would start by actually fixing the problem causing the overheating which is throttling the processor speed instead of trying to use a quick fix (cooling pad) which doesn't actually do anything other than empty your wallet.0
