One of my amazing vets

I had a phone call at about 5,45 from friends to say that a dog had been knocked down on the main road near their house (out of town), I rang through to my vets on the emergency line and told the lady taking the calls to warn the vet I was trying to catch an RTA dog, and I'd ring as soon as I caught him/her. Luckily the dog had taken herself into someone's yard and they had managed to shut the gates on her. When I arrived the vet was already there- she had decided that rather than wait for me, she would come out and help catch the dog so that it received treatment asap! I was so pleased, as the 2 of us managed to get the dog into a van- the others watching had been too scared of being bitten (though they had got the gates shut on her to keep her safe on the road). The dog was standing, but had 2 large gashes and had obviously suffered a large impact on her back end, I would have struggled and probably failed to have lifted this poor injured dog into a vehicle because she was in so much pain. The 2 of us together managed it though by Sarah the vet supporting her head as I tried to lift her body by the less painfully injured parts. The dog showed that she was in fact gentle by not actually biting when she yelped in pain as she was lifted.
It had never crossed my mind that the vet would be there waiting to help me catch the dog, I think she is totally amazing for doing that.
The dog has now been dripped for shock, stitched up with drains in, safely out of anaesthetic, and can be checked all night by Sarah who actually lives above the surgery. We are just keeping our fingers crossed that she hasn't got any undetected internal injuries. Please keep your fingers crossed for her.
Since I do cat rescue, this little girl is an honorary cat for the time being.

Aww poor thing. Hope she recovers soon. The owners I'm sure will be very grateful to you both. Although I know what you did is reward enough I hope karma sends you something lovely in return

Thank goodness you managed to catch her and get treatment for her so quickly. I'm sure the owners will b so grateful that you managed to get her somewhere safe.
Hope she recovers quickly and the owners turn up soon.0 -
Thanks, I'll ring Sarah later (in case she had a busy night with being on call), and just hope the dog is pulling through and didn't have any nasty internal injuries.
She's a short haired collie, and my friends had started ringing round farmers last night, but we think she is more of a house dog- she reacted to a vetbed as if she was used to snuggling up on nice blankets, because she went straight to it. She about 6-ish, but collies can keep themselves so ultra fit its hard to tell, she is in very good condition and very clean, so doesn't look like she lives in on the farmyard etc.
At least with Sarah the vet going beyond the call of duty and coming out to help catch her, we know we did everything asap. I am just so grateful to Sarah-she didnt even know where the dog was, just knew the road and that it was about a mile out of town, luckily kept stopping to ask etc. Sarah is definitely a vet who is in the job for the right reasons.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. Good news,
:) although very sore she is now bright and eating a bit. Once she has a pee we'll feel even happier.
If she has an owner, if she had been microchipped she would have been able to wake up from being stitched up to the reassuring familar voices of her owners. No microchip meant that she had to wake up to the voices of 2 strangersDONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0 -
Good that she has gone through the night well.
If she is clean and well looked after, the owners will no doubt turn up soon looking for her.
Hope she continues to get on well.
Its a shame not all vets are as caring as Sarah, some I think are just in it for the money.
The vet that took over the practise I used to go to has so many rules and regulations I stuck with the other vet who went to another practise when the original owner retired.
Appointments only, no out of hours calls, it goes to the ones that work at the PDSA place etc. payment in full at time of visit, no claiming straight from the insurance. - No thanks!!
The vet I moved practises to stay with took so many of her customers with her, its a testament to her to that people know she cares about the animals too. The only disadvantage is that its quite a bit further to go, but they do at least do all their own emergency visits.0 -
My granddaughter had wanted to be a vet from a very early age. She used to volunteer at a local animal rescue and was keen as could be. When she was at that stage in her schooling, she managed to get into a vets surgery for work experience. It put her completely off being a vet, not the caring and animal side of things, but the fact that everything was so money orientated. Shame really, she probably would have made a good "Sarah".0

I've just been into town to check for any lost adverts, since it appears that she's been wandering up and down that section of busy road for a few days. Sadly there were no dogs missing of her desciption.puppypants, your granddaughter sounds lovely.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0

Well done to you and Sarah!
I changed from one vet to another who had a good reputation - but it was miles from me - I never regretted it! she was an amazing vet! so i will name her! Wendy Jones of Risca...............it devastated me and your patients when you retired. no other vet has come close to your caring and commitment to animals!0 -
Well she continues to improve and has even given a little waggy tail to Sarah.
We think that a local farmer has traced her owners- turns out she's been missing since Tuesday (yet they hadn't advertised) and she's in season- great- not! (we thiought she was in season because of a dischargem but couldn't rule out due to her injuries). We know know she's been up and down that A40 for days, on a straight stretch were the cars frequently do 80+mph. People had tried catching her, but to no avail, we are just lucky that after being hit she went through the entrance to that yard. Sarah is making sure that she's there when the owners come in. It looks like a few strong words are called for.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0 -
meritaten, I know how you feel, I have been really upset when certain vets have moved on over the years. I'm really lucky with the vets I have now. I dont blame you for wanting Wendy to get the recognition that she deserves.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0
