I've just had a new socket fitted, never seen such a palaver.
The electrician wouldn't open up the socket from where the spur came from, but clipped in an RCD instead.
Not a lot different from plugging in an extension lead except with fixed cable.
Then he filled in a form which took as long as as doing the new socket.
Said he could " go to jail if he anything went wrong".

Nope, it is not anywhere between 207V and 253V, it is supplied at a very closely maintained 240V - as it has been for many years.......

Nah, the frequency is very closely maintained, the voltage varies quite a lot, sticking my fluke probes into the socket feeding my computer gives 233 and the installation test I did on site on Friday was at 248

Frequency is king and they (the generators) let the voltage vary to maintain the frequency at 50 with statutory limits of +/- 1% and self imposed limit of 50 +/- 0.4% ie legal limit is 49.5 to 50.5 but CEGB/Nat Grid work to limits of 49.8 to 50.2

Yes he can. I've said this before, but my neighbour, a qualified electrician, was told by the instructor in his Part P course that the regs are for the benefit of lawyers, not the general public. But he sees dangerous professional installations.

and just to get even more seriously picky its a nominal 240V rather than actual and it's an RMS value as well.

As it's sent on a 50hz waveform it has to be a Root Mean Square or an estimate anyway.

Yes I know. Not sure that others do though which is why I mentioned it seeing as it was getting picky.
