Boru 30kw carraig mor multi fuel stove

Hi there just wondering if anyone has one of these?, to cut a long story short we to one of these installed in feb, and it has primary air and secondary air controls....it also has a thermostat control on the bottom left hand side of the stove as you are looking at it. Does anyone know how this is supposed to be used?.. Any information gratefully received as it is a beautiful big stove driving 16 radiators and our hot water on a gravity fed system. It would be nice to know what this thermostat is for and by using it it would help our fuel consumption!

we have the same controls as this but in a considerably older stove. the bottom thermostat is linked to the temperature of the boiler. as you turn the control up a dampener opens/closes an air intake under the grate.5 gives you maximum intake of air under the grate in theory giving you a hotter burn.

they are an art. it takes a considerable amount of tweaking and we are always adjusting ours according to how windy it is, how much draft is coming in the house etc. as a rule of thumb we usually leave ours on 0 when we begin lighting kindling and wait until it is burning well then add coal, close the doors and turn it up to 3-4. on standard tickover doing the heating it stays on 3 mostly all day.

I still havent got the hang of our secondary air intake. i think its designed for burning wood, as it will let the air pass over the logs (based on its location above the door) instead of under the grate.when we did try it out with logs we turned the bottom thermostat down slightly more than usual and opened the secondary air intake slightly. it burnt much better this way.

Ive had a trawl round looking for the manual but cant seem to locate it. hope any of this helps
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.
  • Boru, being Irish, possibly print their owner's manuals in Gaelic.

But WrightK's post exemplifies the pioneering spirit which is part of the multi-fuel/wood-burning culture.

I did a half-day's BushCraft course earlier this year in a Country Park near where I live, and my understanding of fire-lighting made me the king.

There is a two-day follow-up course coming up in November, but I will have to invest heavily in some high-tech thermal underwear
