Considering many pets at home stores actually have vet clinics within them it is appalling that such advice is still being given out.
The vets are nothing to do with the stores, other than sharing the same space. Pets at Home are notoriously bad at giving advice and the quality of the animals they sell is dire. As a vet who worked in a Companion Care surgery within a PaH store, I could tell you some horror stories. Our hands were tied and we were not allowed to treat any sick animal we noticed without permission. Most of the sick animals that came in from suppliers were returned to them (if they survived overnight) as HO wouldn't authorise treatment to keep down the costs.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
That is truly appalling,Chameleon.Poor animals.
I just don't feel comfortable with pet stores selling animals especially when so many rescue places are desperate to find homes for the ones already there. At least hopefully the animals have been well looked after and the new owners vetted.0 -
When adding anti fungus and fin rot treatment to the tank is it ok to keep the filter running, also where can I buy some antibiotic fish flakes, are these available in pet stores. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0

Why are you adding these to the tank?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

Exactly. All those fish need is clean, dechlorinated water and lots of it,whilst the filter matures.Until then the more medications you put in the worse the fish will get.
Please please start to take notice of what we are all telling you and NOT a pet store who must delight in seeing you coming now to see what else they can sell you.0 -
I would have thought the numbers of dead fish in their display tanks would have been a clue that they don't see animals as anything more than a commodity.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0

I used to keep cold water fish . Tank was 6ft by 3 ft with filter , light etc.
This still took a lot of work , part replacement of water every few weeks.
The fish grew bigger and bigger , shebunkins and gold fish.
They eventually went to a pond owner free of charge
Ex OH gave us a black tri tail when he moved house.. these are some of the worst most deformed cold water fish I have ever come across.
Firstly it got a pebble stuck in it's mouth .. honestly, it looked like Donny Osmond.
My husband had to remove it with a pair of tweezers !
Then it developed a swim bladder problem and only swam upside down .. took it to vets who cracked up and sugested a little boyancy jacket made of polystyrene..
As this darned fish was bought for my ex OH by his new girlfriend I was terrified it would die and I would be accused of killing it .. darned thing ended up in a 4ft by 2ft tank of it.s own , swimming upside down for over 6 months..
It finally was relieved of its misery by an overdose of soluble asprin0 -

Exactly. That is what fish are meant to do,grow. If they can't because they haven't enough room, they will get stunted ,get sick and die a miserable death. It would be akin to sticking a puppy or kitten in a small cage or a child in a cupboard, and never letting it out !!
Why oh why do people still think it's ok to keep a goldfish small just so it's convenient for them.If you buy a puppy you research how big the dog will grow.So why not a goldfish?0 -

I cant seem to get things right! I'm adding the anti fungus treatment because one of my fish has fin rot. Surely this is the correct thing to do???All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0
