Waddler is referring to a specific concern that even Mozilla have recognised. The latest advice from Firefox was to downgrade, though they may now have correct the issue.

16.0.1 is out now and that issue has been fixed,
what I think waddler_8 is referring to is that Firefox's no longer does small .1 updates for security vulnerabilities any more and instead puts all the security updates along with new features in the 'big number' release which is every six weeks.
Therefore running version 14 is not recommended as it has none of the security updates of 15 or 16, (in the past v16 could have been called 14.2 before Mozilla changed the way they numbered their updates)

Indeed, but it's the nature of browsers, vulnerable as soon as they are released... I wonder if older versions are less vulnerable? As hackers move on to the latest release?
No, older versions aren't less vulnerable - far from it. Some exploit packs have exploits for Firefox vulnerabilities found in 2006.

Taking just one example from version 15 - MFSA 2012-60 (CVE-2012-3965) - Escalation of privilege through about:newtab

    http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2012/mfsa2012-60.html
    http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2012-3965
Mozilla Firefox before 15.0 does not properly restrict navigation to the about:newtab page, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges via a crafted web site that triggers creation of a new tab and then a new window.
    My bold.

Although fixed in v15, it applies to versions before v15 - So is likely present in v14, 13, 12 etc.

So in summary, what is the current school of thought on which version of FF we should be using?

The recommendation is to use the latest version currently 16.0.1
It will give you the latest security fixes, plus you will benefit from the latest developments which include increased speed and reduced memory usage. ;)

Anyone noticed the 'increased speed and reduced memory usage' in 16.0.1?
