Wrong item sent- surely I haven't got to pay to return?

Bought something off ebay - cost £13 plus £6 postage.

Turned up and it was the wrong model number. Seller had obviously not bothered to check.

Contacted seller and they said I could have refund if I sent it back.

BUT, its going to cost me £5 to send back. Surely that can't be fair?
It was sellers fault not mine and they expect me to be out of pocket for it.....

  • If the seller won't pay for the return postage then it may be worth opening an ebay dispute for goods not as described. (Assuming that it was an ebay purchase).

It doesn't happen too often, but ebay sometimes issue "no fault" refunds where the refund comes from ebay and not the seller. If this was to happen then you don't have to return the item.
They have also occasionally provided prepaid returns labels when buyers have won disputes.

If the OP was to try this and the item was delivered by a trackable method, all the seller would need to do is to enter the tracking number and the dispute would be closed in their favour.

Plus they've already said they have received it, so claiming non receipt is pretty poor advice and could end up with being stuck with a wrong item.

Ask the seller to pay the return postage before returning it, or ask them to have it collected. If they are a business seller they are legally obliged to do this.

I advised the seller I would happily send the item back if he refunded the item cost and postage PLUS whatever it costs for me to send back.

But he wont do that and wants me to send the item back first. I fear then I'll be chasing him for that postage.

Wish I'd been been dishonest and done that now. Less hassle.

This I think is your best bet. If the seller is not being so helpful. Please ensure this is relected in your feedback left once this has been all sorted.

Nice one ebay. Opened a dispute and apparently I've now got to return the item at my cost for a refund.

So buyer sends wrong item and I'm out of pocket.

So, buyer sends me wrong item, I'm out of pocket to send it back. Nice.
