Wireless connection better signal for PC. Booster? Homeplugs!

Hi.
Where we live is a loooong way from the telephone exchange so the broadband speeds are pityfull.
I have my router plugged into my main socket and all other devices, Laptops, Ipads, phones, xbox etc work not very fast but OK. But my Desktop PC often disconnects. I dont know if its positioning of the PC because if I hard wire it then Its pretty stable. Unfortunatly this is not a option.
Is there a device I could buy that I could boost the signal to my PC or make my PC pick up the signal better? I think more the latter as I said other devices work OK.

Ive had no experience of Homeplugs and know next to nothing about them but would this be a fix?

If you can't run an ethernet cable, home-plugs are the best/cheapest option. Much easier and more effective than trying to boost wireless signals.

Tony is spot on, this is a good solution for your home pc. Alternatively you may find that the wireless adaptor in the PC is weak and you need a stronger one.

If the broadband speed is very slow due to be so far from the local exchange, you might want to check your 3G connection speed. You can purchase a router that uses a mobile signal and shares that connection with all of your devices wirelessly.

    Good luck!

Has anyone got any recomendations for what brand of homeplugs would give good results with a sky Route?
Easy set up would help also.

I believe it to be a netgear DG934.
  • You're very welcome. Here's a few to try from, I'm afraid I've only tested the high end models with great success:

Any brand of Homeplug will work with a Sky router (or, indeed, any other router). It simply requires a free ethernet port. Don't get anything slower than 200Mbps.

Oooo! theres a lot to choose from I dont need a pass through as Ive enough sockets, so that helps bring the price down.
And am I right a 200Mbps one should do my connection as 1.5mb/s is the norm for my poor connection.
    Thanks in advance

analyse whats happening with wireless before spending money.

where is the pc and where is the router located, how far apart, what type of walls, which wireless dongle/adapter is in use, which operating system, have you checked for wireless interference with inssider, what strength of wireless connection are you getting

    Thanks for the replys.
Closed, I had the same problem as I do now with my last PC, I just think its where I have the PC. Its under a desk pretty surrounded on all 3 sides by MDF and tucked in a corner.
Then I ended up hotwireing the PC direct to the router. Back then we only had one other wireless device (A PC) and the router was plugged into a telephone extension box next to my pc. Now with the Router been plugged directly into the main socket to give better signal to the many wireless gizmo the kids have, I cant do that.

Will these http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-PA211KIT-200Mbps-Powerline-Ethernet/dp/B004INVKP4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350130570&sr=8-1 do the trick?
and can someone explain what this does http://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-WPA281-Powerline-Extender-Wireless-Access/dp/B0067GS0YO/ref=pd_bxgy_computers_text_b

have you check what strength signal all your gizmo's are getting, when it's plugged into both the master socket and extensions?
