what to do with a felled tree...?

Hi All,

With the strong winds a while back, the tree in my back garden was felled. It's quite big, about 10 foot tall which is now just laying in my garden.

I rang the council to see if they would take it away, but they won't so does anyone have any ideas of how I can get rid of this, does anyone know of a recycle type place that would take it? It's too big to fit in my car (plus there's no way i could lift it!! ) and i'd be forever and a day trying to cut it up!

Thanks in advance,

Linds

There are plenty of people out there who still use logs in the fire at night and go looking for free sources of wood. Maybe you could advertise it in the local paper with offering it free for collection. If you cut off all the brash (the small branches) and take them to the waste recycle centre, it will just leave all the big logs for someone to take. Other than that, if you can cut it up and pile it somewhere in a dark corner of the garden, it makes a fantastic habitat for wildlife (beetles, grubs, funghi etc) for a few years and it will eventually rot away to nothing. Hope you find a solution soon.
  • I agree with all of looney leo suggestions. Also what about taking a picture popping it on ebay and saying winning bidded must cut and collect--- I bet you would get some bids.

Great idea. You could also register with put it on Freecycle online, then you wouldnt even have to pay to advertise it

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I've just posted it on my local Freecycle website so here's hoping someone with a big van is a bit chilly and needs some logs for his/her fire!! :j

I can't believe I'm reading this post. Many people would die for the chance to have an old tree as a feature in their garden. Clearly many branches would need to be first of all sawn off, then one by one they could be reduced with secuters and put in the appropriate bin. It's surprising how much can be condensed for these usefull bins.

A decaying tree will produce all manner of insects/birds, indeed all kind of wildlife and placed visible but not as an eyesore, would put character in almost any garden. In our time we have brought home logs from various locations and they now are home to thousands of our garden friends.

Just one little problem though LindseyM - the root bole.

People generally won't take roots for firewood, recyling centres don't take them (stones in the dirt attached damage the shredders) and they can't be landfilled as they are a "Difficult Waste".

So if you do get someone to cut and collect, insist they take it all or you may still be lumbered (no pun intended !) with a chunk of wood that you probably would eventually have to burn.

    Thanks again for your posts.

Islandman, it is sad I know. The reason it fell so easily, is that the people who lived here before me used the space behind the tree to burn all kinds of stuff against a brick wall so I think this has killed off the roots and the tree. And as I live on an ex council estate, in a tiny 2 bed with an even smaller garden, I can't really make a feature out of it. Also, I think the closest I will get to wildlife is next doors cat!!

If anyone here wants to take it off my hands tho....please feel free to get in touch..;) (well, you don't ask....)

I simply cannot let this one go. The ROOT ?, well call me an old fool if you like but here this. I have stump of a tree with root attached, trimmed a bit nevertheless, and I've stood that up and allowed the weather to blister away the outer skin, and it is beginning to look shiny, unique and a talking point. I wanted to polish it and bring it indoors, but 'er indoors said "no".

We did summat the same where I used to live Islandman, we left the stump about a couple of feet high, screwed a big circle of wood to it. Viola, a kids pienic table. It lasted a good few years too, well until the kids grew up anyway.
I'm sure you're right in choosing freecycle. You're bound to get replies Lindsey.
