SpecificallyCouriers such as FedEx, DHL and the such will normally pay the VAT & duty on your behalf and invoice you some time later.
And please do carry on reading that thread, it spans 2004 to present day and several people have been invoiced later by UPS.

I doubt it - if the cost was £135 and it was not a valid gift, then it would have been dishonest to either state the value as being much lower or use the "gift" regulations to avoid the duties payable on a purchased product and you have been involved in the conspiracy to defraud.
