It may track on the RM site but this does not always happen. Customs charges are dependent on the value declared. VAT is due on items worth over 15 Pounds unless the VAT rate for them is zero as for books. If it is liable for VAT this is paid on the value plus the postage charge. Dependent on the item there may be a few percent duty as well. There will also be a clearance for of 8 or 12 Pounds. Sometimes items slip through without charges being made but don't bank on this.0

I have had 3 packages from the US in the past and only one of them had a customs charge. The package that is now on it's way is also marked as a gift for some reason0
-
It may avoid customs charges, but if the package gets picked for inspection, it may mean that the package ands up getting delayed for a long time whilst HMCE investigate why a commercial shipment was declared as a gift. (something that you as the imported are responsible for). The package that is now on it's way is also marked as a gift which the sender said would avoid the custom's charges.0 -
But there would be no reason for the package to be declared as a commercial shipment as there will be no invoice or anything, just the item on it's own inside the package0

I think sending as a gift gives you a limit of £36 instead of £18 before the item is assessed for VAT.0

I think I read somewhere about if duty VAT of 2.5% came out to under £9 then a customs charge would be waivered, I can't get my head around it all though0

and also, how do the custom's find out how much a package is worth if the sender didn't state how much when it was sent?0

Any more answers?0

It has to be declared on the outer of the package.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Yep, and if the seller lies about the value and the package goes AWOL they stand to lose out on insurance.
Not sure about shipments into the UK but certainly in the USA its illegal to lie on a customs form.0
