Making chicken feed of my mortgage

Hellooooooo MWC! I don't think I've managed to pipe up in here yet
I've been doing a major catch up (so long overdue!), glad to see you're still doing well - LOVING the photos and tales of adventure! (& supermarket vouchers, we've had a spate of those lately as well, fun times :T).
I presume you're still walking marathon-like distances every day?I'll soon be flailing mindlessly behind you once more (new fitbit arriving soon :j no idea how the other one died, glad to get back into action soon though
)
a penny picker upper. MFW approx 78% to go | FIRE 3 years worth (30% savings rate: now aiming for 40%!) | Normality is a paved road; it's comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it | Whatever you're meant to do, do it now. The conditions are always impossible | The only thing you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library0 -

I wish... 20,000+ steps on Saturday but otherwise hardly any
Working this evening (reviewing a report... dire ), would much rather be out walkingMortgage at highest (April 2008): ~£195,000

It's been a lovely day with MSE chums :j
We went on a (free :T) guided walk with the town historian this morning and then had lunch in the garden. Mr MWC cooked a delicious slow-roast lamb dish with feta, peppers and dill  Dessert was made by my fair hands! Gooseberry & hazelnut slices made with goosegogs from the garden
From talking to people today, it seems that Thursday night's storm did quite a bit of damage - I slept through it.
In money-related news, Mr MWC's shares are doing really well at the moment - up by nearly $9/share (~4%) yesterday alone :T - so we're a little richer on paper todayMortgage at highest (April 2008): ~£195,000

So...you did say I could ask...
chicken questions
what breed do you have and how many?
are rats a problem?
do they cost more than you get in eggs?
Thank you.0 -

Ask away Al!
I currently have 6 hybrids - a white star (white chicken, white eggs), a skyline (ginger/grey chicken, green eggs - I've also had skylines that laid pale blue or cream eggs), a speckledy (mottled grey/white chicken, brown eggs with dark brown speckles), a Columbian blacktail (ginger chicken, mid-brown eggs), a bluebelle (grey chicken, light brown eggs) and a maran cuvree (black/copper chicken, brown eggs).
Not for us - no evidence of rats in the 8 years we've kept chooks (including a pest control survey when we had the squirrel in the loft issue last year).
Yes - they are very spoilt pets! Although if I only fed them chicken feed & kitchen scraps, I'd probably break even by selling the eggs that are surplus to requirement*.
* Excluding the cost of the coop & run.

I love that you have one of each. Can you fill an egg box with all different coloured eggs?
Do you use an eglu?
Thank you.0 -

Yes - photo from earlier in the year (including the late Miss B's little cream egg).
I started with a green eglu classic with an extended run and now I have an orange eglu cube in a walk-in run.Mortgage at highest (April 2008): ~£195,000

A lovely day out in London town - the Magna Carta exhibition at The British Library, lunch at a Peruvian restaurant in Soho and plenty of walking
