It funny that before the days of the Internet and before knowing any better, the old family dogs used to get given all sorts of things they shouldn't have, chocolate, grapes etc.
We had one dog who was a real thief, was always stealing things, when you went out, she used to open cupboard doors in the sideboard - ha ha, remember sideboards? - One particular time, we had had a long box of After Eights with tassels on each end given us for Christmas. That got put in the cupboard and when coming home one day, all that was left of it was the two tassels, the chocolates, papers, box had all gone!!
Another time, she was at my aunty's who used to have her in the morning when my milkman dad was at work, my aunty got out a Bounty bar and sat down to eat it when the door bell rang, she put the chocolate on the chair arm and yes - it was gone when she got back, just the wrapper was left pushed under the chair!!
I suppose it was because we have always had big dogs that the chocolate etc has never affected them.
I would never give my dogs those things now, but back in those days, people didn't know so much. I don't give my dog any sweet things at all in fact now.

I spent a weekend once, dogsitting for my daughter. She had an enormous Rhodesian Ridgeback. I took with me some nice butter and a crusty loaf for my stay. I went into the kitchen and found that the dog had eaten all of my pack of butter! Cursing, I took myself off to the local Tescos to replace it, got back and the bu99er had eaten my crusty loaf!!

Rupert learned his lesson the first time he nicked food from my plate - it was chicken curry! Doesn't seem to have done him harm and he has not tried it again

my staffy was a realy good dog in that she never stole food - but one christmas eve she opened my dads xmas pressie - A huge box of his favourite Chocolate Liquers - all flavours, whisky, brandy, rum etc). and we found her surrounded by wrapping paper and an empty box!
Phone call to her vet who came and opened up the surgery for us - dog seemed fine but she had never been given chocolate so we thought 'better safe than sorry' and she had eaten it silver paper and all!
the vet said 'dont worry, dogs dont seem affected by alcohol, just dont let her drive over'.............lmao! yeah he was a funny guy!
of course she had the stuff to make her vomit...........and boy did she vomit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! silver paper and all and stink of alcohol!!!!!!!!
vet had the last laff - he charged £50! and this was back in late seventies early eighties - OH was shaking as he wrote a cheque and worried all over xmas it would bounce! and I had to explain to my dear old dad that dog had ate his Xmas pressie (I bought them for him every year as he loved them and wouldnt buy them for himself!).

This thread reminds me so much of my pup Charlie, we lost him in January last year but I miss him so. I'm at a point where i'd love another dog, but think i'd compare it so much to Charlie. I wrote a blog about him back in November 2010, little knowing his time would come so soon.

    Here it is.

Thank you he's 5 and 1/2 now and a bit of a sod with other dogs but in the house you couldn't get a better dog. My grandbrats adore him and he's the best pal a toddler could ever have.

Jen I lost my heart dog Ailsa 5 and 1/2 years ago and I thought my life had come to an end, she was 8 and was killed by another dog. My family went behind my back and bought me Arran, like you I thought I would compare Arran to Ailsa but I haven't, they were both totally different dogs despite coming from the same breeder and possible being related. Ailsa was as smart as they come and Arran's nick name is Mr. Nicebutdim he really is a stupid dog for a sheltie.
  • Jazz, a cat, once tried to eat a big chewy looking slug... 2 hours later he still had it in his mouth, by now trying to get the horrible sticky chewed up slug out of his mouth and all the slime off his fur. He never tried to eat one again.
