I have a cheap router supplied by TalkTalk which seems to work perfectly fine but I can only connect two ethernet cables to it and I need three connections, so what do I do. Is this the sort of thing I need

or should I get a different router. I am clueless about this kind of stuff so any replies in layman's terms if possible thanks.

It's a bargaining chip not a requirement, if you don't ask, you won't get.
Ask politely, then gradually use more force if they say no, ie, loyalty, mention competitors offers, then if they won't budge, ask for retensions. Ask for a discount while you are on the line too.;)
Or cut to the chase, and go straight through to retentions, say you have seen offers of free wireless router, and 6 months free with xx competitor, and you are stuck with this old thing, what can you do?
How much are you paying per month, and for what?!!
