Normal Coin cleaning DIY?

I have a couple of coins I want to make into fridge magnets. They're not fancy, expensive, worth loads, just regular in use coins.

They're not the most wonderful of looking, mucky etc, so I want to clean them. I don't know what to use. You know these adverts where they dip a 2p into some cleaning liquid and pull out this shiny nice looking coin, that's the result I'd like, but to get that, what can I do/use? :D

They really are just regular current in use coins, so nothing silver, nothing lost in cleaning them etc. (especially as they'll be glued to a magnet anyway!)

    Try some coke.

Coins of different types, years, countries are made of different materials, so if you said which year/coin it was then some more specific advice might be forthcoming.

hmm coke, just leave it in there for a bit?

They're basically coins from Jersey/guernsey/euro, and a couple from the uk, all with in the last couple of years, so just for my own amusement, a set of uk/jersey/guernsey currency, and a random euro thrown in I had left to be used for the fridge.

I'll give the coke a go (got some left from buying a bottle today ironically!)

    Overnight's best for coke.

I know the stuff you mean, from the adverts.... can't think of it at the moment.... and I figured you might have coke/fizzy drinks readily available to give it a whirl.

    Try a pencil rubber
  • A mix of salt and lemon juice/vinegar. Doesn't take very long. Check after 20 mins.

    It's only a game

  • illit Bang Power Grime and Lime Cleaner Trigger product contains two acids: sulfamic acid and phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid (also known as orthophosphoric acid or phosphoric (V) acid) is a weak mineral acid with the chemical formula H3PO4 and applied to rusted iron or steel tools or surfaces to convert iron (III) oxide (rust) to a water-soluble phosphate compound.
    (wikipedia)

And the ingredient in cola drinks is ... phosphoric acid.

Sulfamic acid is present in toilet descalers and denture cleaners.

Brilliant! I'll try the coke over night, then move on to the others if that doesn't do it :D

All I could find was coin collection cleaning pages, which usually say don't clean them!

Ahh cillit bang, that was the advert! I do actually have denture cleaners, as i use them on the loo! Will add that to the list to try as well
