    I signed up for the AdvanceWeb package on Monday night. I then had a query so decided to phone them on Tuesday around 6.00pm. The message said I’ve called outside there office hours which are 8.00am to 8.00pm Monday to Friday. I tried several times until 8.00pm, and always got their answer phone message. I then emailed them and got an email back within a few minutes saying they are already dealing with my query and I should get a reply within a few hours. I think this was their standard auto reply as I still waiting for a response from them.

    Has anybody tried contacting them – If so what was your experience?

    Tuesday was a bank holiday in Germany, that's why they weren't answering the phones.

    Thanks frey_bentos

    They did not email me back so I phoned them on Thursday.
    They said there was a problem with my account so I should just do it all over again. They claim they did email about it but he could not tell me what the issue was.

    Anyway, I setup my account again and by Friday I was all set up. I hope I don't get charged twice.

    Have gone for this purely for Photoshop Elements. Went for https://www.snappycat.net and have redirected it to my current domain. Can anyone tell me what happens if you want to keep the domain name at the end of the term but don't want the hosting? I already get my site hosted for free so doesn't seem much point paying for the pleasure!
  • Hello all,

    As I work in the UK support team at Strato, I thought I would try and answer a few questions that came up in this thread:

    1. kenr - the £35 you saw was not a charge, it was the ordering system testing the validity of your card. The money is not taken from the card. This process has now been changed and no longer appears.

    2. fray_bentos - You are the registered owner of your domains and can of course transfer them to another provider.

    3. gjchester - You can use Coppermine (plenty of customers do and I've installed it myself). Safe Mode is activated by default, but you can turn it off and make other PHP configuration changes by uploading your own php.ini files. Please note that PHP runs as a CGI on our servers, so you must use php.ini for this and *not* htaccess! If you need assistance with this, please let us know.

    4. scat - If you wish to keep your domain but let your Strato hosting expire, you simply transfer your domain to another hosting provider. To do this, contact us no later than 1 month before the contract expires and say you want to change providers. (All cancellations need to be no later than 1 month before the current contract ends).

    5. ankles4242 - unfortunately it is not possible to hide the WhoIs info.

    6. All invoices are charged at the beginning of the contract - for new orders, this only happens once the first domain is connected.

    7. Strato does not charge for exceeding monthly bandwidth limits - neither will access be blocked or restricted. We will simply contact you and ask that you upgrade to a more suitable package.

    8. The current special offer of £1 for a year for all hosting packages has been extended until the end of May.

    Although I will try to keep a look out for other questions you might have, the best way is to contact us directly. Contact details are here: http://www.strato-hosting.co.uk/contact.html

    Phone calls are free (from a landline) - if you only have a mobile phone, you can send us an Email through the MailCenter and we can call you if requested.

    Hope that helps...

    Can you tell me how, I've logged a call via email (Service-ID 052321143), and phoned just now, but no-ones got back to me yet (it's been 4 days since the email was sent.)

    They didn't seem to know what safe mode was nevermind how to turn it off.

    I hope you've received my direct response earlier and understand why I've only just seen your post.

    I have just found your email enquiry on 23.05, which a colleague of mine replied to less that 2 hours later. I don't understand how you didn't receive it, especially as I can read his response in our system, in which he explained how to turn safe mode off.

    In any event, as I explained in my personal response to you (here for the benefit of any other Strato customers), safe mode is now deactivated by default since we upgraded the PHP versions on the shared hosting servers.

    Any other PHP configuration changes must be made by uploading php.ini files to the required directories. Although safe mode is now turned off by default, if you upload a php.ini file to change any other setting, safe mode is automatically activated again unless you also add the instruction to turn it off.

    So, for example, if you're running a CMS and hat to upload a php.ini with:

    magic_quotes_gpc = on

    then just add this line directly below it:

    safe_mode = off

    Hope that helps...
