Car insurance - additional driver query

I'm looking at car insurance renewal quotes and since last time round have separated from my husband. Him being a named driver brought my premium down as I have only had my own insurance for 2 years, having been a named driver on his for 3 years before that (I passed my test in 2007) but now we're not together I don't know if I can put him down (the quote has already jumped up £60 because I changed 'Married' to 'Separated'!)

My dad has said he could be a named driver but he has only ever had company cars so has no insurance in his own name. How do I put this in the price comparison websites?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You can put anyone down as a named driver.

(The catch in "using" your husband is that he may not keep you informed about any claims/convictions/etc which you do need to pass on to your insurer)

Whether or not named drivers have held insurance in their own name is immaterial. Ideally what you want are mature drivers with a good record and no convictions
  • Thanks. So, if my dad had made a claim on the company insurance would I need to declare that?

Yes - full disclosure is required, as any risk affecting a named driver will affect the premium.

Most companies require your driving claims\incidents ovet the previous 4\5 years

Easy to catch you out with the shared database now.

They can see if you or your named drivers have insurance elsewhere or made claims or have points etc.

    Agree with the points listed

But -Strictly speaking, you need the person's permission, otherwise the insurance company would be breaking the Data Protection Act by storing their data. I'd imagine that buried somewhere in the small print is your agreement that all the named drivers have agreed to be a named driver.

There must be a market niche for professional named drivers.

"Worried that all your potential named drivers have abysmal driving records? No more! Sign up with Named-driver.con and let us provide one or more rock-safe named drivers for you!
All our named drivers have guaranteed 20-year plus clean driving records, and are aged 50-65 for optimised insurance rating."

Problem is having a professional driver, It probably wont decrease my premium as much as adding my mum or sister who have both made claims recently.

Mum OK shes older with a fairly clean record, But my sisters had 4 accidents in the last couple of years, How can it be cheaper adding her?

Im older with a clean record for 20+ years

  • Thanks for the advice, folks. Wouldn't add my ex without his permission anyway, or my dad without checking his claim history - just wasn't sure if it being company insurance rather than personal meant that it wasn't 'his', IYSWIM.

Sorry, which magical shared database is this?
