  • when I met my new partner I was recently bankrupt, having been left in a right old pickle by the ex. Fairly early on, when we were discussing where to go on 'dates' I simply said money is really tight, I'd rather not go to somewhere too expensive - when it was clear that the relationship was 'going somewhere', I explained my circumstances more fully. He was grateful for my honesty, as it meant he didn't feel under pressure to 'flash the cash' to impress me - me I was grateful to meet a bloke who would pay his way!!

  • think you need to mention it early on, its not something that should be hidden 35k debt is a big thing...if the bloke is half decent he wont be put off by this (make sure you make him aware its your debt to deal with) if he decides to go then hes hardly someone to stay around if things ever get tough

I would mention it whenever it got to the stage where I had to consider spending a serious sum of money. Going for a weekend away, going to a super-high end restaurant, buying christmas presents.

I told my partner early on in the relationship to be honest. He was great. Helped me fill forms out and held my hand through bankruptcy. That was many moons ago and we're still together and very happy. :)

  • My missus told me the first time we had a long chat even before we were dating she was £27k in debt due to be a student etc. That was nine years ago....still together.
  • The more cynical of us would suggest that you might consider mentioning it before he adds you onto his Unobtainium Amex account.

The more practical would mention it afterwards.
