I suppose it's because a bus driver has to handle cash and put up with all the ASBO cases whereas coach drivers just have to keep old people happy.
I was thinking about doing my PCV until I got on a bus with a recruitment poster inside saying "Earn £350 a week to drive this bus!" Hmmmmm, nah.
Many Bus Drivers in Major cities no longer handle cash as passengers have to pay exact fare into the ticket machine or swipe their pass before the journey commences.0 -

That has been the case for years especially in places like the West Mids, but in rural areas, they still give change so have to handle cash.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -

Just like here in Cornwall where drivers have to make up any shortages, deductions are automatically taken out of the drivers wages.
That my friend is an interesting argument. Where I worked (on the south coast) had the same 'arrangement' but eventually was found to be illegal following a tribunal. The problem was that apart from statutory deductions, you need a specific written agreement between you and the employer to make deductions from your pay or it has to be specifically written into your contract.
Where I worked, it was neither although the union had agreed it which legally under current employment legislation, means nothing.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -

No doubt it is where I worked now as well following the tribunal ruling. Funny though that I worked there for 4 years under that illegal arrangement and the union was happy with it.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. When they moved the cash counting machines in the counting house in St Austell they found a large amount of money at the back of the machines which, of course, drivers had deducted from their wages, not sure where that ended up but we never saw any of it.
Crikey, almost a carbon copy of what happened at my former place as well! No doubt you had a 'cash draw' to deposit your bags in as we did. The bags would drop into a safe on the other side of the wall which was supposedly only accessible to management. It was not unknown for the mechanism of the draw to 'jam' where bags would get trapped and 'disappear' altogether. The relevant drivers would then have to appeal in having the total amounts deducted from their wages. On some occasions, the draw would have to be dismantled and hey presto! long lost bags have been discovered.
As I said earlier, the practice of deducting shortfalls from driver's pay had been routine for many years until a driver failed in his appeal to have a large deduction stopped so he took the matter to tribunal and as there was not actual agreement in the then contract of employment to allow such deductions, the tribunal declared that the practice was illegal and awarded the employee 40% of the deducted amount in damages as a result.
You would think that as the practice was illegal that the union would of known about it. But can you imagine how much money has been unlawfully taken over all the previous years?
Says a lot about being in a union these days...PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
As I was based in an out station we had to pay in at a depot (Camborne) even though you used to count your takings you usually ended up with deductions from your wages, maybe I just couldn't count.0
