Would he benefit by using up all of his allowed driving hours?

He is paid by the hour so of course he would.

Many companies pay for the job and not clock hours, if the driver goes over the allowed hours he cannot claim overtime.

Really? Considering how close they get paid to NMW, legally the employer cannot do that.

If the employer paid overtime when a driver exceeded the legal maximum driving/duty time,he would be seen as condoning an illegal act.

When you think of the responsibility that a bus or coach driver has, the pay is really quite scandalous. I always give a decent tip on a coach journey.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Tips used to be the norm many years ago but unfortunately these are now few and far between no matter how well the driver has done his job, many operators took tips into account when fixing drivers pay but now pay just over minimum wage.

Why are bus drivers paid more than coach drivers?

I would have thought they both should be paid the same as both are often about the same size both carry members of the public, just a bus stops and starts all day, and a coach is used for longer distance, or am I missing something?

I suppose it's because a bus driver has to handle cash and put up with all the ASBO cases whereas coach drivers just have to keep old people happy.

I was thinking about doing my PCV until I got on a bus with a recruitment poster inside saying "Earn £350 a week to drive this bus!" Hmmmmm, nah.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

It is interesting to look at the age/gender profiles of coach drivers compared to bus drivers.
I believe you will discover that most coach drivers are older and male. Partly this is through the nature of the job, but is reflected in the different pay rates on offer. It is perfectly true that a coach driver might be expected to convey 50 or more passengers all the way across Europe and back again in complete safety for little more than the NMW!
