We made my children patchwork quilts last year and I'm thinking of memory boards this year. Home made stuff is lovely! I have bought them stuff too, but it's not about how much is spent x

When I was about 3, my Dad made me a Zoo for Britains model animals, all to scale. He used scraps from the kitchen lino tiles as pathways, and made teeny tiny fences out of copper wire. 50 years later, it's still treasured.... How many shop bought toys will have so much love in them and last so long?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

I saw this on another thread on here, might be easy for you if you are good at making things and painting.

I would like a handmade castle please. For me. Age 33.

Maybe you could promise your mum not to make her a castle for Christmas but you'll do whatever you like for everyone else. And for her, you could do what I did for a label-conscious friend of mine - put together a gift basket of samples/posh freebies, wrap it in cellophane and present it in a department store gift bag :money:

Sometimes stopping at a department store counter (I like Clarins for my mum) and asking lots of questions and asking for samples so you can make your mind up works wonders - just make sure you're dressed up a bit so the ladies working there confidently expect you to come back and buy whatever you like best.

go for it, one of my brothers favourite toys he had was a fort my dad made him, so much better than what you can buy as it wasn't broken in 5mins and lasted him years xx
  • I had a home made dolls house as a child and a farmyard(ok it was a piece of board with wood edges painted)and toy furniture cleverly made from fabric covered match boxes!
I am sure your son would be thrilled and it will stay in his memory for years-craft places charge a fortune for simelar things-enjoy making special memories.

I only have my son (and two nephews) so he has no siblings ;)

I make sculptures (not out of card or wood) and do work for magazines and sell & exhibit my pieces...I did a piece specially for my sister a couple of years ago and my mum said it was cheap and mean making presents...that going to a shop and spending money shows people are worth it ;( you'd think I'd stop listening but it's difficult!!

What nonsense! The castle sounds fab, go for it. :)

I have fabulous memories of a dolls house our grandparents made for my sister and I one year with our initials in stained glass...it was beautiful ;) we grew up with money so we had a lot but it will always be that house that I loved the most.
    ..

I think you may of answered your own question

What you are doing sounds wonderful and far more special than anything you could possibly buy in the shops and I'm sure in years to come it will be the present that will be remembered the most and the fact that you put so much effort and time into creating something your child will love.

I wish I was talented enough to create something that I could give to my children that hopefully would be passed onto future generations. I'd ignore anything anyone says and go for it! Make sure you post some pics!
