broadband without home phone?

I have Sky broadband. I am very happy with the broadband service. However, what I dislike is that I HAVE TO take Sky home phone as well.

I never use my home phone (I use my mobile), so the line rental cost I pay is a complete waste.

Can I receive broadband without having home phone line rental? Is this possible?

Many thanks!

  • Not really unless you use a dongle 3g connection which can be very costy or its a case of going a library for free access

All provders lease the lines from bt openzone to a mark up on the exchange they lease for services

The line rental cost is not a 'waste', it's what you need to get the broadband connection to your ISP. Your ISP does not maintain the line out of what you pay them, that is done by your line rental provider.

I make my Sky line work for me. I use saynoto0870 for business numbers and call during the free time (7pm to 7am) and use the landline for 0800 numbers as they cost me on my mobile.

BTW - it is BT Openreach not Openzone who maintain the lines. :)

There's only three ways (that I know of) of you getting broadband without a phoneline.

    1) Mobile broadband - can be very slow and usage also can be low (this may change when 4G is in full swing).
    2) Virgin Media Cable - only avilble in certain areas.
    3) Two way satellie broadband - This is VERY expensive and usage is low.

    A tip: 0800 buster

Free to call 0800 numbers when you use it

    T-Mobile have a wifi unit at £29.99, 5GB downloads/streaming with unlimited browsing, £15 a month, cheaper than 3.
