Um yeah on the ethical prawns :o and I confess to buying wild N Atlantic from a wholesaler occasionally in a 1kg tub. :o Guess that makes me a prawn ravisher....

:rotfl: that line in the thread did make me laugh

Kirri, Riverford have sprout stalks in some of their boxes this week. Hth.

Ooh thanks, will have a look :)

I love them stirfried and they keep really well on the stalk.
Don't think I've seen organic versions on the stalks in the supermarkets, not even Waitrose.

Bit on SLS in the DM today - about drs misdiagnosing illnesses.
I had typical eczema symptoms and always thought that was what it was until I went organic on toiletries as an adult..

'GPs also shouldn't prescribe aqueous cream for eczema - not even to wash with. It's incredibly damaging to skin, especially children's, because it contains sodium lauryl sulphate, which is the harshest possible detergent.
'As a consequence, it breaks the skin down, making eczema worse. Very worryingly, many people are still given it as a moisturiser as it's the cheapest option.
'Research has shown more than half of children who used it suffered an immediate bad reaction, such as stinging.'

I have sensitive skin ie allergies to some detergents and really bad skin reactions to copper and Fuller's Earth. Even some supposedly hypoallergenic stuff will make my skin feel sore. I'm also allergic to penicillin.

Little Me stuff for babies includes a moisturiser which I use a lot because it's really light and I can buy it in Boots or ASDA. Can't find the tube ATM so looked up the website and all their stuff is SLS and paraben free which I hadn't realised.

I use Clarins stuff without probs (my mother buys me stuff for birthdays and Christmas) but I don't know whether it is SLS and paraben free and suspect it isn't - none of the tubes/bottles currently to hand have ingredients on them and the leaflets are long gone.

Ordered 'Serve to Win: The 14 Day Gluten-free Plan for Physical and Mental Excellence' in hardback from Amazon in US and it arrived this morning. Originally it was a Christmas present for OH but I think we'll have to share it cos I couldn't resist peeking..

The only thing I disagree with is his liking for fructose (which can only be processed by the liver) having read Robert Lustig's book, 'Fat Chance'. He does eat meat, poultry and fish but no dairy.

Novak Djokovic eats organic food. " I try to eat foods that are organic, natural and as unprocessed as possible. " :T
  • Perhaps I shouldn't put this on the Organic thread...but it makes scary reading.

I've sometimes been tempted to try some of Ocado's food (?) products from the States, but some of them look, and are, very unnatural.

Now I've read the link I probably won't try them!

    Hello everyone,

I'm an organic noob... well I've been doing Riverford boxes for about 6 weeks and avoiding processed rubbish, cooking everything from scratch (shock to the system!). I'm loving the health benefits - I've lost a stone without feeling deprived and being hypoglycaemic I've not had a single hypo since my lifestyle change :)

I gave up my beloved Diet Pepsi (screw you, aspartame!) and as much as I try, I can't get into drinking plain water. So I was wondering if there was a fruit squash or something similar that you could recommend that would help me?

^ welcome to the thread and good to hear about the changes in food/lifestyle/health :T

I also gave up Pepsi.. most difficult thing ever... (I still have the odd one when going to a pub, just banned at home as I was drinking too much of it..). It took me a while but I actually prefer water now, maybe it will just take you a bit of time to adjust?

Have you tried Whole Earth cola? it's not cheap for a tin, Amazon seem to do it the cheapest, A&C are middling price and H&B expensive. I occasionally get this as a treat. It's not the same as coke/pepsi but when you don't have it it's a reasonably good substitute (you might not think it at first).

As for squash, my fave is Rock's - they do all flavours though some are only stocked in certain stockists, Ocado have a few, I like the lemon or the lime the most but the orange is good too. Once you get into drinking water more though I find I only have a very occasional glass of squash, usually if I'm very tired.

Edwardia, I binned all my Clarins (and even worse Clinique) many years ago. This was pre-ebay. Now I Ebay stuff if I get given chemical toiletries.. feel bad but I just don't want to use it plus I find the fragrances unbearably strong now I don't use that sort of stuff. (Even half used expensive products sell). You need to take your mum for a day out in Wholefoods, they have a separate section in the shop full of toiletries ;)

Not organic but try Fentimans - nothing artificial & some really good flavours:

    Fevertree are good too:

Whole Earth used to do organic fizzy pop, the lemonade is good.

namecheck.. don't worry, the lengthy URL gets truncated but the link does work.

AFAIK having bought American/Canadian food products from various sources, if a product is banned it's banned and can't be imported by a company or individual.

In the case of dyes they aren't banned just strongly advised against which is why you can buy Kraft Dinner Macaroni Cheese from them. The organic version (available from Amazon) doesn't have dyes. Ocado puts labels on some American foods state that they may contain GM ingredients.
