Organic food in supermarkets

Can you afford to go organic ? Came across an old Daily Mail article today that mentioned Safeway. At the time Waitrose had 1500 organic products, Sainsbury's 1000, Marks and Spencer 159, Tesco 800, Safeway 500, Co-op 200 and ASDA 400.
I thought it was interesting that although these product numbers are old, that we've still been finding more organic products in Waitrose and Sainsbury's than other stores.
Wonder what the figures are these days?
Re the butters etc, YV org spreadable is available in Asda and Morrisons in the 250g or was the last time I looked! I tend to just buy the hard butter now.
Have olive oil and org sunflower oil (Waitrose) for cooking. Buy rapeseed as well if UK, Waitrose do a couple though non org I believe. Never heard of anything about toxicity before, I can't keep up with what we should and shouldn't have! It's promoted now as being healthier than olive oil but I prefer the taste of olive oil.0 -
I will try to find out Kirri, but it may take awhile to get accurate numbers.
The organic spreadable is for husband. OH doesn't low carb and lurves wholemeal cheese rolls and he doesn't want to mess with hard butter at work.
We both used to live in a village which was surrounded by rapeseed (EU subsidised crop) and though it looks pretty it stinks and gives people allergies. So we've never been keen on the stuff. There's loads of info for and against but I feel like if the EU is subsidising it and pushing it and it was deadly I won't risk it.
If you search this forum someone did put up reasons why olive oil is healthier than rapeseed oil and sunflower oil.
Because I low carb I use more fats and therefore Waitrose Aberdeen Angus beef dripping, Britannia beef dripping, Kerrymaid lard and Gressingham duck fat quite a lot. None of these are organic, haven't found any yet. Also use Khanum pure butter ghee without ethyl butyrate from Spices of India www.spicesofindia.co.uk The ghee (clarified butter) has a distinctive taste but surprisingly to me the others don't/
OH mostly uses oil and we buy ASDA Extra Virgin olive oil 2.48 for 500ml. Tesco is the same price and when it was on special offer at £2 a few weeks ago (did put it on this thread) I got loads. Haven't actually tried the Waitrose one. I'm happy with the ASDA stuff because we don't re-use it so want something cheap.
I like to fry eggs in butter with a splash of olive oil to stop them burning.0 -
John West wild red salmon 213g tin was £3 now 2.50
Not organic but some of the sliced meats on offer from Thursday might be additive free. Not all prosciutto is for example but Lidl's is and generally the cheapest.
There's not a lot of organic cheese out there so I do supplement with additive free stuff and from Thursday Lidl has loads of cheese on offer - Raclette. Gruyere, Emmental. Mull of Kintyre, Brie, Bavarian smoked and Parmigiano Reggiano.0 -

bornintoit which brand of coconut oil do you use ?
Lots of low carbers use it and I bought Parachute brand from Spices of India. It tasted like it was burnt and I hated it but it makes great body moisturiser especially for dry feet
Maybe it was a dodgy brand and a different one would taste better ?0 -

I use Coconoil Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, I use it on my skin and to cook with. I like it.
I have just used up all my processed glamorgan sausages today, which meant 5 of the things and needless to say I felt abit sick with food by the end of that meal lol. Now I just have 5 bags of pasta, 4 packets of spaghetti, 15 tins of baked beans, roughly around 30 tins of various smart price rubbish, breadsticks (which I was hoping to have used up by now but I can't get the lid off the Organic artichoke spread I bought on Friday! and various other non-organic, high carb crap to get through before March lol. Wish I hadn't spent a small fortune on it all now.

I found the website for Coconoil bornintoit and there are a couple of special offers on
www.coconoil.co.uk
That's quite a carb mountain you have there  Baked beans are carby but they aren't terrible, nutrition-wise whereas the pasta is basically carbs and nowt else. If it were me, I'd use the spaghetti as an excuse to have Seeds of Change organic pasta sauces (on offer at Ocado) with organic mince. If you add protein and fibre to carbs you lessen their effect. Also, how about making pasta salad using wild salmon ?
But don't feel bad about it because at least you can start making better choices from this point on.. and if you need cheering up, I recommend Respect organic carrot cake from Sainsbury's and Tesco . www.respectorganics.com0 -
Sainsbury's has Heinz organic cream of tomato soup 400g 5 for £4 atm but my nearest Sainsbos had run out.
Sainsbury's website shows organic Weetabix (24) 2.48 but they were 2.69 in-store. However this still saves money on the 2.99 charged by Tesco, Ocado and Waitrose.
Waitrose and Ocado both have Yeo Valley organic natural live yogurt 500g 2 for 2.500 -
OH went into Sainsbury's today looking for SO organic wholemeal rolls pack of 4 £1 (normal price but cheaper than rolls in local Tesco Express) and they didn't have any
Ecover was reduced from 12.99 to 9.74 though until 04/12/12 so he snapped up two as that's quite a saving0 -

Thank you for the tip. I think that will be very helpful while I am using up all of these carbs. I went into the bigger Sainsburys today, they did have alot more organic food choice than in ASDA and my local Sainsburys but was still underwhelmed by their meat choices. I only bought the £4 thighs and legs and they aren't as good as they used to be.'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'0 -
I have a silver notebook which I use to tell me what's in the freezer without needing to rummage, in theory. I found that I had had some some of those Sainsbury's So organic chicken thighs and drumsticks and they were definitely 3.50 in September.
Abel & Cole sells 1kg (average) of organic chicken wings for 2.09 and they are really good but sell out like hot cakes. OH loves them marinaded in olive oil with Old Bay, Jerk or Cajun seasoning and roasted.
Daylesford organic chicken wings at Ocado work out 40p per kilo cheaper than the Waitrose organic chicken wings at Ocado but if you go by pack price rather than per kilo the Waitrose ones are cheaper. Confusing I know :eek:0
