Query re sale of Sony Xperia Tipo

Hi
I sold my Sony mini Tipo on ebay as I only had it temporarily while my smartphone was being fixed. I now need to make sure it is restored to factory settings etc before I send it off to the buyer. If I bought it as an unlocked phone and put in my contract SIM, does this mean that without my SIM in it it remains an unlocked phone? I just want to make sure it is all as close to a new phone as it can be. Many thanks.
