Argos bike lock was "burned" open - Bike stole

Hey,

I got a bike lock from argos from their own range for a new bike I bought.

I left it outside a local shopping centre while I went inside to buy a few things and locked it to railings and around the frame and wheel.

When I came back the plastic around where the key inserts was melted and of course bike missing..

The only way the bike could have been taken is if the lock was opened.

They were kind enough to close the lock again after taking the bike..

Is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks for any help

    this is a windup right?

incase it isn't, no claim on your insurance (I hope you have some) and buy a better bike lock.

Have you reported the theft to the police?
What about checking with the shopping centre security to see if they have cctv footage?
  • it'll be a wind up, the username shows up on google as a website ....

I'm done with this thread, but might put some more info down for future bike owners.

Take a note of the serial number, make and model and take photographs.

If you have a permanent marker or UV pen write your contact number on it

If it's a really, really nice bike, get it insured, and buy Something like this

If it does get pinched, make sure to check gumtree and ebay for local area bike sales, having a UV phone number or unique mark makes it easy to establish ownership in conjuncture with GPS.
  • Why would this be a windup?

I am not at school, I am training for the fire service in Northern Ireland, I bought the bike as part of my own fitness schedule while not training.

As for the username, it should be changed, it was a poker business site I owned a few years ago, as you can see I have been here since 2008 and I was asking a question regarding the site when I registered.

No need at all for the condescending replies people.

My bike was stole with a lock I bought that wasn't fit for purpose and resulted in a loss of just under 500 so I want to know if there is anything I can do.

I have reported it to the police, they said there is pretty much nothing they can do..They aren't going to go around looking for a bike.

The first thing I did was go into the security office in the centre and they checked the CCTV but said they only show directly under the door and don't show anything outside, the bike was on the railings directly outside about 2 metres from the door.

Such condescending people here about a serious question.
  • When I say bike, I am talking about a bicycle, I bought a top of the range as I would have been using it a lot for training / exercise.

Like all security devices, they are not 100% guaranteed.

Locks can be picked, safes hacked etc. Put it down to experience.

In all fairness, for a top of the range cycle, you should really have had a top of the range cycle lock and not one where the lock mechanism was surrounded in plastic.
This sort of lock really sounds like it's just meant for old/cheap bikes that wouldn't be worth the effore trying to steal.

It wasn't this one was it?

If the locks easy to break open then it isn't fit for purpose.
