You shouldn't need to clean the entire tray every other day, just use a good absorbent clumping litter (clay is not the best), a jumbo tray (eg. cheap underbed storage box) deep filled so wee never hits the bottom and scoop regularly.

Another Oko user here, we flush any solids or clumps and leave the base litter in the tray for a few weeks.

Tesco do a basic nappy sack too, I bought 3 packs of 100 and they were 9p each pack, last ages too. If push comes to shove, there is no reason not to just wrap it up in a bit of newspaper - what we used to do in the "old days"!

Empty my girls tray morning and evening. use Tesco or Sainsburys basic clumping cat litter as it makes for less wastage and is kinder to the purse!

Don't bother with liners, complete waste of time and money. Try getting a proper litter shovel; they are like a draining spoon so when you fish out the lovely solid bits you can shake off the unused litter back into the trays, same with the wee clumps.

I have one girly and her sack of basic clumping litter lasts two weeks esily - and she could wee for England!! :rotfl:

Ohh Asda does 300 for 35 pence -

Definitely good for daily emptying of the cat litter trays. Just have to be careful if you've any rough edges on the scoop.
  • i also use catsan for my one cat, and it lasts around a week too. i take the poo and put it in the toilet as catsan is safe to flush, and then empty all the weeks old litter into a plastic carrier bag, then bin. then i just rinse the litter tray for any wet bits and flush down the toilet, sprinkle with bicarb of soda (stops it smelling so much, although catsan is by far the least smelling out there, and although expensive it lasts far better than when i used sainsburys basics etc) hope this helps!

There should be little to no smell if you use a good litter and a high meat content food, even a raw diet.

  • I'm trying out Worlds Best Cat Litter for my two, only been using it for a day :) though.

It was very easy to clean. According the bag 7.5kg should last 2 cats 35 days.

It's flushable too and isn't as dusty as other brands.

I use Lidl's clumping cat litter. £1.79 per bag and pour the whole bag in my cats tray.

Single cat but was prone to sticking her derier over the end of the old tray so went up a size.

The reason I pour the whole bag into the tray is like many cats she likes to dig as if she is heading to Australia sometimes just for the sake of it. It's actually a good litter for clumping too.

A couple of times a day, usually morning and night, I just tip the tray on it's side, give it a wiggle and it reveals the clumps, remove with a nappy sack, knot, then bin. Tip the tray the other way, wiggle and do the same.

Top up the tray maybe every two weeks or so with another bag of litter.

By having the litter quite deep, it means it clumps without the mess at the bottom of the tray.

Hope that bit at the end makes sense and finally I think it's Asda / Tesco value nappy bags I have which were dirt cheap.

i use oko cat litter and would never change to anything different. if you have it deep enough nothing actually touches the tray so doesnt have to be cleaned as much.

Ditto! I only clean out the entire tray about once every couple of months, usually when it's started to get quite dusty in the bottom. Scooping daily is all that's necessary. A 40l bag will easily last me 6mths with 2 indoor(ish) cats using a large deep litter tray.

what's with flushing?! I am now going to only drink boiled water - sewage treatment plants are not set up to process cats `doings'!

As Firefox says good food minimises smells & actually amount produced in litterboxes
