Charnwood wood burning stove questions

Good day one and all,

I am looking for a decent woodburner, and I know a bloke who has two Charnwoods up for sale at £250 each.

I've had a quick look at them, and although I didn't get a model number, I think they are either Charnwood LA 45iB or 50iB.

Obviously it will need a bit of restoration, but that's not beyond me. So, my questions are:

1) Are these decent stoves?

2) The 45 gives around 10kW to water, and 3kW in to the room. The stove is intended to be buried in the wall - however I plan to install it free standing in the fireplace; will this mean I will get more of the heat in to the room (I hope so!).

3) The plumbing will not be ready until next year, but we would like to use it purely as a room heater over the winter - is this OK, or will it knacker the stove or boiler? I have heard that you can fill a backboiler with sand if it is not in use and the stove will be OK - is this correct? (I understand that the stove would not self-regulate without the boiler in use, but that's not a problem)

I am aware of chimney lining and all the other practicalities, but just want to make sure I don't buy something unsuitable...

Cheers!

i cant really advise on the technicalities as someone will probably be around to help you with that but we have the 45ib and they are extremely efficient stoves, ours is freestanding too and if you need a freestanding kit charnwood can supply you with one.

On the radiators that work (this is a separate issue and non related to the stove) they provide really good heat, really good telephone support if you have a problem with the stove itself, and all the spare parts you need.

We (along with quite a few neighbours) have all had them installed in our houses by the council way back and everyone comments on their efficiency.
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.

Charnwood are a very decent make of stove, easy to get parts for and maintain.

As for using a boiler model as a room heater! dont do it, it will knacker / warp the boiler regardless of whats put inside it - other than water obviously.

You'll also be roasted alive ! 13Kw room heater  we have a cove thats 11Kw 3Kw to room 8Kw to water and im normally sat around in my shorts and a tee shirt on a night time even in the depths of winter.
